Rear Spoiler

anyone experience slight hair-line crack/scratches due to wear over time. barely noticeable, but curious if due to repaint/finish due to so-so quality workmanship, or normal wear. mb cert. body shop would re-do given warranty, but not sure if worth it. thanks all.

Not really...... I have never seen this happen

Have you ever removed the spoiler and tried to install it again? Sometimes, when a spoiler is removed, it bends (or arcs) the other way and would have to be bent back to normal before installing it back on; otherwise, the spoiler will constantly try to arc into a certain position and over time may crack

What year car and what spoiler? If you have an E63 and are talking about that, I have seen cracks in clearcoat before. it will eventually literally lift off in little pieces after a bunch of time. On a white car, the fin turns yellowish and has to be re-painted.

yes. seems like a couple thin hair-line cracks on clearcoat. it's a RENNtech spoiler for my '05/55. had repainted, finished and attached about 8 months by mb cert body shop. just noticed imperfects last couple days. another question. given double-sided tape spoiler attachment, any issues w/ removal and re-attaching, or best to have good body shop do work? again, not very noticeable as of now, but just planning ahead, in case needs redone. thanks.

I don't know that a paint jo b on a spoiler would be warrantied. If it is, then yes get it dealt with. It is just a matter of time. It will likely last a while, but the upper portion will slowly grow hazy with time. It is from the sun's UV and not being able to properly cure the paint job on plastic parts.

thanks, Jangy. assume all these rear spoilers (painted w/ clearcoat) will have likely issue at some juncture? many fairly high mod 55's running w/out the rear deck-lid? looks great, but thought would last longer.

At some point, yes. In all honesty, yours should have lasted longer. It should take years and that is if you park it outside. Painting plastic parts, especially pliable ones is really tricky. They should have used a different clear coat (IMO). From what you describe, it sounds like they treated it as a usual paint job that they would end up baking. Instead, plastic parts just sit so you need a different compound and more layers.

At any rate, if you get it repaired, be sure to put lots of protectant on it. Clay it, polish it, and throw at least three coats of wax on it. That will give you some UV protection.

noted. thought same too re: duration & use. will likely have body shop take a look. fortunately, they are very cool when comes to customer support. anyway, the 55 is garaged at all times, so a bit curious. thanks, Jangy.
