Ok guys, I called J.Alexanders in Northbrook, and have planned to cruise to the restaurant, then cruising to Sheridan Rd. We will ride to Wrigley Field to the McDonalds, and then we can head out from there. I will have route maps to hand out at Starbucks in Streets of Woodfield. Any questions or comments, let me know. Can't wait to meet up with everyone!

Well, I'm open to ideas on places or routes to take. I agree about potholes, but I think they will be nearly everywhere. Do you guys want to stay on expressways? Doesn't matter to me, anybody else?

Why don't you guys plan a route with some different types of roads? If you guys want to start out of the Woodfield area a better (my opinion) route is to take 90 west to Route 47 (Huntley), exit at rt.47 and take 47 south, there are lots of fun, off the beaten path, twisty, smooth 2 lane roads between there and Sugar Grove. Once in Sugar grove you can get back on 88 east and head to Downtown Naperville or Oak Brook, both are very upscale destinations with lots of dining, and bars. Downtown Naperville on a nice Saturday or Sunday afternoon is like a car show anyhow, you will see lots of nice exotics and classics. It is about a 70 mile trip from Woodfield to Downtown Naperville via this route with almost zero traffic congestion. I run this route with buddies on Sunday morning motorcycle rides.
Just a thought......Let me know what you guys figure out, I'm in for any type of ride/drive.

That sounds cool to me too, would you guys like to do that? I do have commitments at 6 that evening, so I might have to cut out a little early if it goes past 4:30 or so.

Guys,
I think we should be wary about potholes because all it takes is one of us to hit one and pop a tire to ruin a trip out there. Also remember traveling with large #s of cars and lots of stop lights = splitting up group = people getting lost = pain in the ***. So we should keep that in mind. I like the idea of wrigley field because that McDonald's there has a nice big parking lot. If we don't want to do that one, there's always the one downtown.
jrcart: I like your idea but I think we should keep that kind of driving to the summer time, curvy slippery salty roads that may have lots of potholes will probably not be a good idea for the meet this time around. Just my $.02
I think we have a solid gameplan... unfortunately I think it's still going to be pretty cold and well under average. This winter has been pretty brutal.

edit: Marcus, good point on the slippery roads, I'm in either way so just let me know...

I love the idea of heading west, especially for summer. I do agree with the pothole concerns too. If you want, we can reroute to mostly expressways. And I can help change a tire pretty quick if we do have issues. I don't know, this decision making stuff is making my brain hurt. I'll be back....

Another nice ride is Rt 34 west to Rt 71 south to Norway, IL. We can rent out the kart track in Norway for a few hundred bucks for a few hours. It is great for autocrossing, very wide and long for a kart track, it makes for a fun change of pace, and a safe environment to let loose. Once you get west of Naperville and Aurora, there is no traffic and no cops.
Another good ride is Interstate 55 south to Interstate 80 west to Starved Rock State Park, this is a longer drive, but probably some of the best roads and most scenic roads you will find in Illinois. The roads are wide, clean and curves everywhere. It is in the middle of nowhere, so fine dining will not be an option. Lots of good "hole in the wall" diners along the way though.
Last but not least, is another long, but awesome drive...Galena, IL Depending on the start point there are various, great routes to get there, the best is probably Interstate 90 west to Rt 20 through Rockford and Freeport. An alternate is Interstate 88 west to Dixon, IL and then take some nice backroads north into Galena. Galena is on the border of IL and IA on the Mississippi River. Believe it or not there are actually lots of small mountains and foot hills in this area. The roads are pristine, smooth, hilly and twisty with minimal traffic. Once you get there there is great dining and a scenic historic downtown area. From Woodfield it is about a 2.5 hour drive.

Jrcart: Excellent suggestions for a spring run IMO. This particular meet is on Feb. 23rd (this Saturday). Check earlier parts of the thread for info.... You should make it out though in one of your other rides!!
I would love to come up and do one of the longer runs with your group once spring rolls around!
edit: I'm sure others would join in on the longer runs this spring/summer as well...

As for the pothole concerns...they are everywhere right now. You can't avoid them especially with this damn winter we are having...so much for global warming. There are even major potholes on the interstates and tollroads. The less traveled country roads will have less potholes than the busier interstates and state roads due to the fact that they are not getting beat up by semi's and thousands of cars everyday. I'm in either way, it is a bit cold out right now, but you all know we get about 2 weeks of "good roads" here in Chicago before they start putting up the orange construction signs.

I am already working on something for the end of May......Stay tuned, it will be a day trip, but well worth it!
Is everybody still cool with the original plan then, or should I reroute us to expressways? I thought we could take a modest pace down sheridan to Lake shore for a little while.

Oh, my mistake, I did not realize it was going to be so soon. I may be flying out to Cali early (Saturday) and going to the Nascar race at California Speedway. It's still up in the air, but if I don't go I may join you guys in one of my other cars, if the invite is open to non-MB's, maybe the CTS-V. Let me know, thanks.

Ok, how about this: Feb 23, 10 am we meet at Starbucks at Streets of Woodfield. We leave at 11 and cruise to J.Alexander's, in Northbrook(I can call and set that up if I can get an official head-count). We eat a great meal, then head downtown, and like Marcus said, he has a couple good ideas for parking down there, take some pictures, and head out. Sound good?

LOL! LOL! LOL! If anyone from a warm weather state clicks on this thread they are going to laugh their a$$ off. The high temp for Chicagoland this Saturday is supposed to be 22...and that's heat wave! When the temp hit 50 it's off with the convertible tops and down with the windows. You've gotta love Chicago winters. I have a freind that lives near Miami and he was complaing a few weeks ago that the daily high temps where in the mid 50's and he was freezing his a$$ off, he actually had to turn on his furnace. If it ever got this cold in L.A. Govornor Arnold would have to delare it a disaster, the last thing they would be doing is planning a group drive. I guess we know who the die-hards are.

Sorry I can't make it, guys. My flight doesn't get in until almost 4 pm.
FWIW, it was colder in Chicago than Ankorage, ALASKA yesterday...

I have never missed a meet, but the twin turbo project is calling my name!
I'll be sure to make the next one...maybe it will be at the track.

Route maps available.
Ok everyone, I have a route map and directions available that I can Email to anyone and everyone that asks. I am calling the restaurant Friday afternoon to give them a head count. If I am off by a few it won't be a problem, but if I am within 1 or 2 it should mean no waiting for the room to be ready. One thing I was thinking about after the map was finished was when we leave Wrigley, we could take Lake Shore down into the city, and finish off by leaving the city on Lower Wacker, and after we get to the post office, the north siders and south siders(and Hoosiers!) could split off on 94 or follow us west siders out to 290. I'll be doing that if you are interested. The rumble of 15 AMGs(and one 911) on Lower Wacker will be awesome! PM me your email address if you want the map and directions sent to you.
Drive safe,
Nick
