E63 better than E55?

Personally, i am the proud owner of a 2006 E55, and on the freeway i have smoked a couple of E63s. After some magazine research i have seen that the E55 0-60 time is just a little quicker than the E63 0-60. Did AMG really make the 63 slower than the 55? If so, what advantages does the 63 have over the 55, considering it also guzzles a lot more gas. please help me get over my confusion...

better is a subjective word. It all depends what your looking for. I have an E55 last month I was given an E63 for 2 weeks. I put about 1500 miles on it. The 63 felt more refined. The transmission and interior as notable positive changes. Exterior only slight changes. So better is subjective. If they throw some Turbo's I will be the first to trade in.

Ok... not better, but what advantages does the 63 have over the 55? Other than the amazing new steering wheel.

Smoother Transmission
Better Steering rack
New steering wheel
Better seats
Alcantara on the seats
Aggressive bumper
Naturally aspirated engine feels smoother

I'm probably missing some stuff. I liked driving the car but it was not worth the jump especially knowing how fast it would depreciate during the first few years.

It's a real beauty. The interior trim is carbon fiber, not wood. He has posted photos before and will probably post more. Maybe there are some in the sticky photo thread.

My E63 feels much more improved on the interior than my E55 and well power delivery is much smoother than the E55 (which is so brash its like flying in a jet, which I very much loved and still have a 55K in the house for.

My E63 is simply put, more enjoyable on a day to day basis than the E55.

Carl, I love your M5 very much. Congrats on the purchase. My wife keeps talking to me about an M6 for herself as a weekend car, and I keep telling her to take the CL63 haha.

Nevertheless, you have an amazing car.

Thank you very much. High praise from a guy with such an awesome array of metal in his garage. As regards the M, you really should do it. Handling, steering, brake feel, unbelieveable engine while the SMG truly bangs in the shifts. Go for it my friend.

+1 ... do a search and you will get all the opinions. Not trying to be rude but the other post and this seems to be a bit of overkill.

Look at the quarter mile compendium that Juice put together and you'll understand that those C&D numbers don't really fly. I know you're proud of your E63, but the 55's are quicker off the line due to a near 100lb/ft torque advantage.

P.S.- I smell troll.

And I will admit, the new front bumper on the 63 makes the 55 look kind of weak. Those air sills on the side are just gorgeous

I might be wrong, but torque alone does not mean thate E55 would be faster just because its peak torque is higher then E63. The key here is RPM level at which the torque is delivered as well as how steady that delivery is over the RPM range. Based on the HP numbers E63 clearly has higher HP based on the torque/RPM calculation -- meaning that E63 should be just as fast if not not faster.I would venture to say that E63 is even or faster then E55 0-62 and 1/4 mile run. I might be wrong, but based on the numbers once you get E63 in the higher rev level it should outperfrom E55.

I understand that when bench racing you can make an argument either way, but if you look at ACTUAL quarter mile times for STOCK cars, the E55's blow the 63's away. We're talking documented, no arguing here. Not a single stock E63 is in the 11's. Besides near-full torque delivery on the 55's is at 1800 rpm, RIGHT OFF IDLE, so if you know how to launch it, you're gone.

edit: did the legwork for you, here's a comparison between the E55's and E63's times from Dragtimes.com. Given several of the E55's are modded, but many are stock. You won't find the first E63 until PAGE 5.

Sigh... oh but what a topic this could be. This is even more boring than talking smack on M5s.

E55 vs E63 is a useless argument. Each has its own. If nothing else, the 63 is newer.

Yep, agreed. In the end the 63 just wants to be in the conversation

Oh please, its obvious that the 55 is faster from a roll. There are a million videos to prove this, as well as personal accounts. Look at the 1/4 mile trap speeds or 0-150mph, E55 leaves E63 in the dust. Just by browsing youtube, here are a few races from a roll showing the E55 clearly being faster

http://youtube.com/watch?v=KLLsK4TiBpU

http://youtube.com/watch?v=5YaHyBnf7P8&feature=related

Sure on that particular day, the E63 might've been faster, but there are a million different factors that can determine an outcome of a race. 8 out of 10 times, E55 will be faster from standstill or from a roll.

And what's far worse is that if you want more power from your 63, you're pretty much out of luck when it comes to modifying it. Throw in a couple of grand into the 55 and it will make it will make the 63 look like its standing still...

P.S. I don't mean any offense to the 63 owners, just stating my personal opinion that if you're looking for a faster accelerating car, 55 is the better choice. E63 handles better, brakes better, and has a better transmission.. but all I'm talking about in this post is the acceleration.
