When you were going from a roll, it looks like the M5 immediately got the lead on you. Are you sure you were in the correct gear, you didn't just leave it in "D", did you?

I'm not sure about running a modded 55 with a stock heat exchanger.

No matter what size of pump you install.. it will not coold down high IAT's any better than stock.

Its the heat exchager... the key.

running more boost and no IAT's relief.. will have power initially but will suffer after a few hard runs.



LET or Code3 should be able to fix that asap...

no excuses.. but we need to start looking not just at boost but keeping the boost cool.

I thought about that to, the first few races we did I pulled away each time pretty easy. After the first couple I couldn't keep up and just got worse. If you look at the one vid I was pulling away and my car just dropped off mid race and he went right by me with ease. Could be heat soak, we were running non stop. My pump helps but it won't stop it. Stupid thing was I had my datalogger with me but forgot my laptop to plug it in to.

That's ok, we'll be doing more 'testing' I'm sure.

1) What speeds were the rolling starts from?
2) What gear was the M5 in and what gear was the SL55 in during the rolling starts?
3) To What speeds did you guys race to?
4) Which company did the ECU tuning on the M5?

Did you down shift prior to the kick down or did you let the car down shift? This makes a big difference on who gets the jump? Were you in manual mode?

I shifted to 1st in S mode before we took off.

I launch poorly, Darren is simply the better driver in that regard. I didn't stand a chance from a dig.

Same power, but E55 weighs 4,080lbs while SL55 weighs close to 4,400lbs. Did you guys know that SL is actually the heaviest 2-seat car in the world ?

P.S. Even heavier than the Bugatti Veyron w/ AWD and 16.4L W16 quad-turbo engine! What the hell did AMG put in that thing to make it weigh so much? Can't be the convertible top... SLK55 with same 5.5L V8 only weighs 3,300lbs

I was told its the top and all the junk to make it work. The SLK is a smaller car you cant compare the two.

if you hit 180 degrees on your IAT's its going to start pulling timing.. if you hit over 200 IAT's its probably performing worst than stock.

search the IAT's that Code3 did on the heat exchager... you'll see that the system needs a few minutes to cool down after a hard run over 100.

if you do back to back runs .. basically you were running super hot air into your engine and ECU steps in.

As others have noted, the key is to keep your IAT's under 140 which is a very good level.. no where near ECU's threshold.

While Code3 or even LET are probably able for you to keep you IAT's under 140.. any run over 100 will create heat that both systems will spike.. but the recovery times are seconds not minutes.

Specially in Houston during the Summer.. I would not drive any stock or modded 55 with a stock Heat exchanger.. your car would be good for a few runs and it will need time to recover.

I'm not saying the HE will add power.. but you would of stayed consistent with your runs.

I'm not surprised of the outcome.. but I'm surprised at the way he was pulling at lower speeds.

What do you think the outcome would be IF the SL had headers too? Well until heat soak played a card again....
