My dealer called me this morning with a smokin deal on a slightly used loaded 2006 white/black SL55 AMG with 9K miles and a CPO for $79K (new it was $145K). I'm tempted but don't know enough about the SL55. Opinions please, good car, bad car, walk away, run away, great price, good price, can do better etc. You're the experts and I value your opinions and experiences. Thanks.

For not a whole lot more, get an SL65 AMG. Add say $20K and try to get CPO 7 yr to 100K. That's what I would do. The SL55 is nice but hey the SL65 has 600+ HP and 700 TQ. It's bad a$$. You will have to live with more miles but it won't matter with the CPO. Just my .02.

If you don't need to haul 4 people comfortably, then go for it. Going from 55 to 55 is kind of a lateral move (as far as engine), so I would personally take the jump to the 65 given the choice.

I say go for a 2004-2006 SL600, I bought my 2005 SL600 over 2 months ago & can't get over how badAZZZ this car is, the SL600 comes w/the bigger AMG brakes too, + nearly 100 ft lbs of more torque than the SL55, (I almost bought a 2005 SL55 but I'm a power fiend, & in my back to back test drives from different dealers, the SL600 has deffinite power edge) Although the 55 has the cool quad tip exhaust, you can get either w/AMG body, like I did.

I'm going to get the ECU tune that'll bump it up to AMG 65 power levels Either way you go the SL R230 is an awesome ride.

i think the 600 would be the way to go if you want to stay in that price range, but have a little more torque.

I found an 05 Designo with 26K miles and nicely loaded for 74K.

if you are in to the look the 55 looks better than the 600. either way it goes you'll be happy with either car.

the 65 is a beast, rare to see on the street, and will cost a bit more money, but you'll like the power so much that you'll probably sleep in the car because you'll never want to get out of it.
