e55 or m5, need reply asap!!!!!!! please
i'm finally ready to purchase a new ride actually tomorrow, but here is my problem!
i like the m5 for the smg gearbox and how sporty it is. and the e55 for its huge amount of torque and ambience; however i used to be more drawn to the e55 but lately after spending a lot of time in this forum and in the m5 forum's i realize the m5 might be better suited for me, because i live houston tx and the average temperature here can easily hit over 100F during the summer and about low 90's during spring and fall, only during the winter time we'll cool down a bit. now i'm constantly reading about the e55 loosing power, due to the intercooler getting heat soaked, (i'm not gonna mod the car, leasing!!!!) specially in warmer climates, so therefore i'd like to get an honest opinion on this subject. by the way i've got a heavy foot, so the car would see redline multiple times a day, so performance is very important, i don't need the car to perform different after 3-4 runs due to heat.

if you're going to lease, are you sure you're talking about an e55 and not an e63? the e63 won't be troubled by heat soak like the 55 so there's no worries...get what you want.

Dunno if you're trolling or not, but stock for stock, and in that heat, I'd take the M5. Plus if the roads in TX are as smooth as they say then the M5's suspension would be perfect. If you want something you can wring out and that stays consistent regardless of how many times you get on it, then go M5.

why does everybody think i'm trolling, I'M NOT!!!!!!
i just want an honest opinion!
unfortunately the roads here in houston are not smooth at all, they are very rough, so i understand your point reagarding suspension.
anything else i should know about?

Range on the M5 is horrid, tiny gas tank and it goes fast at 8,000rpm. Otherwise it's been the most reliable, fun and consistent car I've ever owned.

I drove my cousins M5 this past weekend.... feels more sporty than my E55, but the lack or torque was very significant.... you really have to wind out the M5 to get moving.... I didn't like the SMG at all, very jerky in every mode, it was neat to hear the car blip the throttle on downshifts though....

05 e55 and an 07 ML320 cdi
ran an M5 for 12 months..if you wring its neck its focuseed and quick, but day to day, i found it rather dull...no torque, always stood filling it up etc etc...small fuel tank and rubbish mpg.
better build quality than the e class though, and when your pushing onm the chassis is leap years ahead...
for day to day, the merc, if you drive hard more often than not, the M5...
or try an Arnage T![devil](https://mbworld.org/forums/images/smilies/devil.gif)
just thought i'd throw in a swerve ball as most people wouldnt even consider one, but they are brilliant, and around the same money if you get an early one...like an 02/03 car
you only live once

AMG E55, Stage 1, Strait Pipe from Primary Cats
I was looking at and test drove a 06 M5 and a 05 E55 and loved both but the torque and ***** of the E55 plus 20k less made my decision easy. I really liked the interior of the M5, it is more modern then the E55. The M5 is a very refined car and the E55 has the axe murderer feel, both are great in different ways.

heat soaking
but nobody has answered my question regarding houston weather, and the heat soaking issues i've read about on this forum before. that's the biggest factor in my decision between purchasing the e55 and m5. i want realiabilty or should i say consistency!
its gets really hot down here during the summer. the heat index can climb over 100 F easily.

If you not going to mod you car you should be fine with heat soak. Unless you intend to track the car in 100deg heat , or do 5 qtr mile runs one after the other... If you mod by increasing boost you will suffer - no doubt.
The later models have better pumps, and you could always put on an evosport intercooler mod to assist (100% removable after lease) if you like.
For a DD a E55 is a easier car to drive. For a w/ender I would go M5.

The trouble with heat soak comes from a defective pump. You change it out for $150 and the problem goes away.
I'm in Dallas and since changing my pump and adding a lot more heat via mods, I've never had a problem. I average 13.5 mpg's and 4,500 miles per set of rear tires, so I don't baby it.

Stop whining about heat and do some research.

Driving style should also factor in here. If you're generally a calm, passive driver with occasional manic fits then I'd go for the E55. If you like to drive around everywhere like you have a 6 star wanted level in Grand Theft Auto I'd suggest the M5.
I am personally a very aggressive driver, my German genes won't let me waste a single second or opportunity, so my M5 fits that niche perfectly.
