What'd I brake?
I've been getting an odd (almost) clunking noise coming from the rear ever since the drag races. It only happens when I have used the brakes and then go into forward load, so i wonder if something is "shifting"? First thing I thought were toe links bushings, but can't find anything. the car had new tires put on a week or so ago and we looked under it and the only thing I can think of is the floating discs. Could that noise be the rotor sliding on the rounded bolts? When at the drag races, I had it in dyno mode and was using the brakes to SMOKE the rear tires.
Can some of the veterans tell me what I tore up? Also, is smoking my tires by holding the brakes a bad idea given aftermarket rotors? Oh, I guess I never said that i had the EVOSport cross drilled and slotted ones.

holding your brakes is not that huge of a deal, of course it wears your pads quicker.
do you get this noise when slowing down to a stop for example? like a flex disc gone bad?
rotors are rotors, doesn't matter if oem or aftermarket. if they were warped, you'd get squeeking, vibration but not cluncking.
i'd double check your calipers are secure, caliper guides are in, inspect the pads condition of course.
wouldn't be a bad idea to change your diff fluid while you down there, considering how cheap it is, and just in case it's diff related...
that's all i can think of now at this hr lol

Thanks for the thought. If it is the diff, does that mean I'd see something in the fluid? Oh crap. LSD may have to move up on the list. I'll take a look, but I'll probably have to get it looked at by someone who knows the car, or cars at all.

Sure sounds like the old clunk I would get with my Kleemann LSD. Definitely wanna get the diff checked to be safe. Scary part to go south at high speed Jang.

You may also want to put the car up in the air and quickly check all the rear subframe mounting bolts. These have been known to cause said clunking noise.

Thanks for the replies. I'll get it in as soon as I can. I was also thinking subframe, but again, the bolts and bushings look fine but what do I know?
If it is the diff, should I just have it repaired, or is this a thing that I can upgrade? I don't wanna drop in an LSD to a problematic diff. I'm just hoping the LSD replaces whatever I broke.

I would check the subframe bolts as the forum has seen those fracture and rip out of the body with hard launching.
Get the diff resolved before you go for the quaife upgrade.

The Quaife wont replace the gear set and if you damaged that you wont resolve it with that upgrade.

I was gonna suggest this. My last Beemer had a clunking noise somewhat similar to what you were talking about and when I took it in to the shop, it was the subframe mounting bolts (or the suspension connections to the frame or some such). Anyway, good luck with that noise.

If it is the drivetrain, I guess I was rough on it but I didn't think I had the power to hurt it on the launches. I think it was more during the burnouts. Either way, I guess pay to play. I hope what it is can be diagnosed quickly and is a "cheap" fix.

4 wheeled car.
do you hear any clunking when going over speed bumps? A long time ago on a W210, I had stoptech brakes, and some of the screws on the floating rotors came off the hat and caused the clunking. After replacing the screws it went away.

Thats what i am wondering and yes, the noise is getting worse and is now clunking on bumps (slightly). I quit riding it, except to try to figure it out (LOL), but I'll try to take it in today or tomorrow and get the diagnostics .
If it is the subframe, what part tears? the bolt or the piece being locked into place? i hope whatever it is can just be replaced and no welding is needed. I hate that kind of crap.
If its the mounts, then it makes rations and i'd guess its the tranny or diff ones.

Jangy, my car makes a clunking sound (heard from the rear) whenever I go over speed bumps. It made this sound since day one. I took it to 3 different dealerships, and none of them could find anything wrong They seem to think it's okay. I then test drove another brand new E63 and it did the same thing. Over the past year, I've pushed the car very hard and been to a lot of track events and havent' had any problems with it so far, but the sound is still there
Do you hear that sound when you go over speed bumps? Was it there before and now it's louder?

I noticed the same exact sound from my car. Slight clunking from the rear when going over speed bumps. I firmed up the suspension to setting 1. And it doesn't do it as bad. I mean its really nothing. You can drive yourself crazy wondering about every sound your car makes. My M3 made some noises here and there. And it was purchased new. I think every car has its own distinct sounds.

I like soup: I agree about new noises. Something tells me this is normal... I hope!

Well, the little clunck is still there and has stayed about the same. But, the front end now makes a loud clunck on speedbumps and at low speed. Neither of my boys came through for me, so i am trying a different route. I'll update soon.

What are the rear subframe mounting bolts and why would that be a problem? Sorry if this is a silly question, never heard of this before.
