63ers now it's 5W-40 - Official AMG PL info

Dear Tslick,

Thank you very much for your post. This occurs as the automotive fluid standards have changed in the meantime (in May 2008)

AMG recommends the use of the following oils:

- Mobil 1 5W-40 for M156 engine (63er models)
- Mobil 1 0W-40 all other AMG engines (as well the AMG diesel engines that was used for the C 30 AMG)
- Mobil 1 5W-50 SLR engine

Before that change, the Mobil 1 0W-40 was used for the 63 models as well.
We hope that this information helps.

Best regards

Jon, thanks for posting, that's very interesting info. But I thought Mobil doesn't make 5W-40 anymore (at least for the U.S.) ????

It's actually better (not saying Mobil is bad or that most people won't be fine using Mobil), but Motul is actually a 100% synthetic oil (polymer based) unlike Mobil which is still based on petroleum stock. Plus it smells like coconuts.
I carry 5.0L jugs if anyone should happen to want any. I switched to Motul 5w-40 at 1200 miles with a new MB filter. Mobil 1 needs to get on the filter situation lol.

MHP, it does not matter if you are 100% right. Use Motul in your 63 AMG engine and your your warrantee goes poof. Of course after the warrantee, do what you want.

I needed to add some oil recently so I went to AutoZone and found Mobile 1 5w-40, but it was Mobile 1 Turbo Diesel Trunk 5w-40. Unsure whether it was okay to mix, I instead got the 0w-40. At my next oil change, I'll have the shop use 5w-40.

Jon,
If you're not busy this Saturday, I'd like to invite you to join me for a drive. I'll be in San Jose to meet up with some friends. We're going for a drive through some sweeping roads and straights. You've met a few of them already before at the Exotics Meets. PM me if you're interested.

Jon,
I had my dealer change my oil/filter (they offered it for free) when they were doing the now non mandatory (read: CP) diff fluid change. They had no issues with it whatsoever. From previous posts you know I could care less about my DT warranty, but again, if they specify 5w-40 synthetic, I don't see how they would have a leg to stand on as long as you use an equal or higher quality oil than Mobil.

I think the legaleze is that they specify "Mobil1 5W-40" and clearly indicate that other synthetic oils are not approved. Take a look in your "Approved Factory Service Products" booklet that should have come with your car.

Higher and lower quality is subjective because one can point to a specific property that they could claim is why this one is superior for "our engines".

As you say, it does not matter to you, but it does to me!

AMG originally stated to run only 0w-40, now they switch to 5w-40. Prior they told those with blown 5.4s that they can run 0w-40 or 15w-50. The bottom line is it's (whatever oil they choose to make "official") all marketing.
The good news is no one's ever going to blow a motor by using either Mobil or Motul.
