Obviously most would agree a warranty of some kind is must for this kind of car. So when the warranty is up would you hang on to your car or move on to the next one?

If I was not a car *****, I would keep mine but I replace them every 12-24 months. I would not be afraid to own one out of warranty if I had a good local shop and the car had reasonable miles. In other words, I wouldn't want a car with 100K miles out of warranty or have to service it at the dealer. I would also take the position that if things like the airmatic failed, I would use it as an excuse to mod instead of repair (coilovers).

Aside from the gadgets, the major parts of the W211 E55 are VERY solid and should last for many years and many miles.

I'm coming up on a year out of warranty w/ 67k on the odo. The start/stop button on the gearshift quit working last week, but no other problems to speak of. The drivetrain, etc. is still rock solid w/ zero known issues. I rolled the dice that I would have fewer than 4k worth of repairs in the 2 years that the extended warranty would have covered for me. Since the car had free service included for the 1st 50k miles, I've spent less than $800 for all parts/services (excluding tires which have been over $4k) in the 3 years I've owned the car.

Any idea what cost is involved in fixing the start/stop button? Just curious.

$4k in tires in 3 years. How long do tires last? My old W208 CLK55 ate through rears maybe every 12-15k miles and I drove it conservatively 90-95% of the time.

I don't have a clue on the start/stop button cost. Thankfully, I'm way too busy at work to get it in right now to have it fixed.

As far as the tires, the rears last about the same as your CLK if you aren't overly hard on them and the fronts last about twice that. I was using PS2's, which were about $800 for a set of rears and $500-600 for the fronts if I remember correctly. The past 2 times, I've tried a cheaper brand of tires that was recommended by the tire store, and both times I've been sorely disappointed. The 1st set I removed very early and the second set is going away soon with only a few thousand miles on them. I've also had 2 premature tire failures due to road debris.

mine is an 04 that just came out of warranty the beginning/mid of this year. Absolutely no issues at all. I have been driving it all this time out of warranty and tried to sell it a while back, but every potential buyer lowballed me b/c of the warranty. I am *thinking* about getting one just for resale...
