How about a beater truck for < $300/month? Why risk someone else plowing into your surefooted car?

The toys get parked from late November until late March, it's Jeep and ML season for me. I put Blizzacks on one of my M3's a few years back and made the mistake of driving it in the snow. Traction should be one of your smallest concerns. Have you ever seen salt damage a set of brake calipers after only one winter of driving on snowy, salty roads, not to mention suspension and steering components and misc. grease fittings? Go lease a Nissan Xterra or Totota Rav4 for $250-$300 a month. I've never quite understood why people drive these kinds of cars in the snow and salt and grime.

What do you mean? Performance difference? I run 19 inch Sl65 wheels in the summer with pirelli pzeros. The difference in performance is noticable, but the dunlops are pretty good. I had Nokia sport something wheels, but they were really not working with this kind of car, the ESP keeps cutting all the time, the Dunlops dont do that. Continental would have been my first choice, but they were not available. During the slippery months I manage well, the 18 inch wheel is not optimum and I would prefer 17's with a little more rubber, but they wont fit. If driving in dry weather the winter tire seems to be rubbery and noticabely soft, but the Dunlops are really good. I have the 18inch E63 wheels in the winter. In the summer I drive in sports 1 or 2 mode usually, in the winter only comfort because of the snow. And in the winter I have c gear mode too.
So basically winter wheels: You manage well even in slippery conditions with c mode and comfort mode, the ESP is that good, but you will be stuck in deep snow. Compared to summer wheels they are less noisy, rubbery and soft, but its actually pretty good.
I like this combination. But when I got stuck in soft sand with one wheel digging in in the summer, I really seriously started thinking about a AWD Ml63 or RS6, but they cost about 300 000 dollars, and I dont like Audi and I think the ML is to high for me so sticking with the E55 for now. Not the best winter car, but I manage.
