What's the top speed with the limiter removed?

I know top speed is limited to 155, with 030 going 186.

If you get a tune with Kleeman, Renntech, VRP, etc... do they remove the speed limiter, and if so, how fast can a CLS55 go top speed?

Is there another outfit that just removes the limiter without costing a ton?

I had a wierd dream last night, I was chased by a bunch of bandits, ala Mad Max. I outran them all on this post apocalyptic highway.

They caught me when I stopped for gas.

Think I may need psychiatric help.

I think C only adds another 30mph to it. I don't know why they don't just turn it off. Maybe they can just add rpms and not on vs off?

actually i think I had heard one reason they dont turn it off primarily is because of our tires. I thought I heard when traditional street tires get up around 200 something bad can happen to the actual tire. maybe blow out or something like that since they are speed rated at speeds less then that.
Someone correct me if I am wrong if you know for sure.
I also thought I had heard someone recently developed a tire using some kind of nano technology that can support speed at over 200 without any fear of these bad things happening.
I would love to hear someone who knows for sure what the deal is with this.

I wouldn't want to stake my life on that last 17mph worth of rating, going that fast.

Personally, I like going to fast, but only up to a point. Anything over 130ish/140ish and it's just not fun anymore, at least for me, because I start worrying about all the crap that the stupid semi trucks leave all over every road surface, whether there are manufacturing defects in the tires, etc.

When you get up that fast, if any minor thing at all happens, you're gone. It would be a lot more fun if it were a controlled environment, and I knew the surface was fine the whole way through.

Guys... we're getting a little

We've got a legitimate question here that frankly we should be able to answer.

1. What is the top speed?
2. How do we achieve it?

This isn't a social dissertation on the pros/cons of travelling 200 mph.

I'm still relatively new to this forum so I am going to lean on some of the more experienced guys who've probably seen this question before.

Unless you gotta get away from a bunch of raving bandits, man. I'll tell ya...

Seriously, I agree with you. There are threadsholds to driving. At a certain speed, (and it's different to everyone) you are more alert, your senses are sharper, reflexes are more fine tuned... then the next stage the adrenaline is pumping so hard you can't hardly hear... then, to lmost ogical people, the final stage of panic and saying oh s***!!... you've gotta get down! Automobile magazine had an issue a couple months ago on going over 200mph that was very interesting read.

Funny dream you had there.

I cant speak for VRP or other tunes but my Renntech stage 1 dyno topped out at 178 but like others said, I dont think our tires can handle more than 200mph. Where to go in CA to run the car up to 186mph w/out getting tossed in jail?

I thought most high speed tires are rated for prolonged speeds.. So running a good Z rated tire up to 200mph and then shut down is different story, than crusing at 200mph on the autoban..

I would also rather have no speed limitor. Age dictaes what you worry about at high speeds. Less age=less worries!

Yeah, but you have the 030 which are rated up to 180 anyway, without the stage 1?

So then it should be the same for the E55, or extremely close. At this point it will vary from car to car depending on the state of all the mechanical parts and the age of the lubricants / filters, and who put the engine together.

I think I heard 330 km/h which is 205 or so.

That's the same figure the e60 M5 was supposed to have, benefiting in great part by its 7-spd transmission.

I owned one for a year and 22k miles and can attest that it was still pulling hard at 170 (indicated) but I never tried for more.I saw videos of 200 indicated.

Using that as a point of reference, I think it is possible that the E55 would be the same or similar. Gearing is different but the HP, weight, etc is similar.

So...maybe 205 is the answer . Maybe.

You are correct, speed rating are for prolonged use, but also factor GVW running a 186mph rated tire up to 205 for a few seconds is not risky...at least not risky for the tire. Trying to find a road clear of traffic and long enough to do 200 for more than a couple seconds is a chore in itself, 10 seconds at 200mph is gonna eat up over 2/3 of a mile of highway. The few times I have had my car up to 206 I run out of room before I run out of ***** or tire.

162 no problem

I have gotten my CLS55 to 162 with ease with minor upgrades including pump, pulleys, belts, and ECU and was told it can top out at 198 based on the dyno specs

While occasionally cruising in the eastern parts of Germany, autobahn traffic is often quite sparse. A couple of times I ran it up to and beyond the two century mark. While my queen-of-stealth, autobahn marauder exhibits excellent handling traits (suspension modifications have been accomplished along with ride height- angle and wickerbill), it requires far too much concentration to maintain such speeds for any prolonged period of time. Quite frankly, for myself, my long distance comfort zone is between 90 mph-110 mph depending on traffic and weather conditions.
Here's a run on the A60.

And here's what we do with Mercedes Benz museum pieces in Switzerland:

I love to drive fast, but only under the right conditions. Honestly, where on any public road can you do 200 mph safely? And do you trust your skills to drive that fast without practice?

Here in Colorado, traffic in remote areas can be sparse, but I've never done more than 140 on the highway (well, OK, 155 on the French autoroute in a big 'ol AMG sedan that I can't recall). Tracks are different because they usually have adequate run-off areas, cornerworkers, and ambulances, but a buddy was burned to death even there. I used to take my 300SEL 6.3 out east of Denver on I-70 on New Year's Day morning, when all the polizei were home asleep, but first I made sure the tires (Michelin XWXs) were properly inflated, etc. That old aerodynamic brick would hit 140, but we never held it there for more than a minute. This is serious stuff, too dangerous unless everything (including the driver) is perfect. That's why I've never top-ended my E55 so far. Besides, driving on tracks, especially with your buddies, is way more fun than just going fast.

Just remember: When you have to slow down to pass cars, you know you're going too damn fast.
