Personal Best Top Speed In Your E55?
#27
I maxed out the speedo on my 2003 and it does only go to 160 on the digital. I have done it a couple times, but the last time there was a strange beeping sound coming from the front when I did it and the whole car smelled like gas afterwards. I think the parktronic went crazy because of the wind buffeting. The gas smell is something I could not get it to do again though. I have run it for a good amount of time at 130+ though and it rides firm and planted up high in speed.
I am running 245/35zr20s on the front and 285/35zr20s on the back. When I had my stock wheels on, I tried it up to 150 and it felt less planted.

I have done it in a few places, first time was outside Vegas out near some AF base. I have also done it a few times here in the far west burbs of Chicago on the interstate. Teere is a long stretch of interstate heading out west towards DeKalb, IL that does not have a lot of traffic and you can find pockets in the traffic where you can run it up to 200+ pretty safely and easily.
The car is planted and stable at those speeds, I have even taken some big sweepers at 190.

I took my stock CLS55 with the 030 package to 187mph on the speedo one morning very early - was rock solid and accelerating slowly until the speed limiter kicked in, then just held firm at 187mph

How were you able to "keep it firm at 187"? Back when my car still had the 186mph speed limiter I could hit 186 easily then it would just shut down, it was like somone fliped the off switch, I was not able to hit 186 and just cruise along at 186.

NO, I only hit 190 or so in Morroco, I was not sure if I could make that turn at over 200 so I shut it down.
Interstate 88 heading west between Rt.47 and Dekalb is a nice flat open stretch, try it some Sunday morning, just make sure you have a buddy running a mile ahead of you looking for the police.

It is the same sensation as on my 2002 Dodge/Mercedes/Freighliner Sprinter Van (prior to ECU flash). It would hit the 86mph speed limiter and it would just run out of breath and stay there.
Just as an FYI ...... Here in Florida I feel its actually dangerous and inconsiderate to be limited to 85mph on vehicles like these that ride on freeways (and yes I do understand the tire speed rating - mine are not OEM).
Often I would pass slower vehicles on the I95, only to have them speed up next to me and then I douldnt complete the pass, would have Mack truck tooting their horns at me and couldnt go anywhere, and I would be stuck there until I had an opening to drop back in the slow lane. So I had the ECU programmed and now can happily hit the aero limit around 110mph, and make the pass stick.
Hitting the speed limiter and hitting aero limit feel very different, as with the speed limiter you are accelerating (albeit slowly) and then you hit the wall. Wrt to the aero limit, you know a long time ahead when you are going to hit the it as the rate of acceleration has slowed to almost non existant.
PS Jim - been a real fan of your car for a long time!

Only 150 before I had to slow down. But it was pulling as hard at 150 as it was at 75! Figured there's a lot more room to play, but hard to find a playground!

I just though about where you could do this speed in NY. Either upstate or out way east on the L.I.E towards exit 70 flat out downhill for miles

Come on Vic, you know that road that heads north with a 5 in it right? My limiter calls an abrupt halt to the fun at an indicated 170mph but you have no such excuse, Vic. 205mph in stock form say BMW, for those who don't know. When limiter kicks in it flicks back and forth from 169-170mph but won't go higher or lower. Shame as still lots of revs left in 6th and the whole of 7th and so totally planted 170 feels like 90.

Have you ever paid attention to how quite it gets at 190-200mph, I don't know how to explain it, the engine noise gets drowned out by the wind noise, but the wind noise is quiter than you would expect. Also, you can still hear the hum of the tires on the road and thats it, there is nothing else.

Just to stand up for those of us who have yet to join the buck and a half (150) club, I've seen 147 in my CL55 (modded) and 141 in my stock CLK Black.
Neither numbers are top end, just the best that I can hit on a daily basis.

I said 170 in an E60/E63 M is like going 90 in a regular car- read more carefully next time or I'll put you on probation and add you to my ignore list. I'll also turn other members against you.

Oh and my thoughts about 190 not feeling like 170 had nothing to do with your post- stop posting here and go out get an ECU that allows you drive that car at full capacity (mph wise).

You have received one infraction point.
Darn you Vic, always one step ahead. Me get my ECU flashed? I still haven't been to see Eloy yet or pulled my charcoal filters. If I didn't dyno 600 at the wheels bone stock (I have a home made garage dyno) I'd describe it as life in the slow lane over here. I'll give you a ring when I'm next down the 5 though bro

189 on a dyno.... only 130 on the street before i chicken out...
I had a good friend take out my 1993 RX7 up to 157mph with me as a passenger in 1993 and pretty soon we had 12 cop cars on us...glocks to our temples....he want to jail for a few months since he was the driver...ever since then I've been skittish...be careful everyone. I don't want to hear anymore M5 tragedy type stories.

Oh yeah, when on the 5 watch out for all the trucks with furniture in the pick up beds- I nearly got whacked by a recliner and nasty spode infested sofa
Sorry about going OT.

The highest I've seen in the SL600 was 145mph but that was after I lifted & glanced down at the speedo, I'm certain she was close to the 155 limiter.
In my old modded C6 I was racing some guy in an Audi S6, I flew past him and the damned C6 felt like she was about to lift off the ground, when I finally had the ballzz to look @ the HUD/speed it read 184 mph, i'm betting I hit 190+ before I lifted & looked @ speedo.
The C6 Corvette felt very loose/floaty @ those speeds, I NEVER took her up that high again, in contrast the SL600 feels like a battleship! steady as a rock @ 1xx mph... I will deff be testing her after ECU/TCU to see if she can reach the 200 club
