Very close.

SL will be slightly faster.

Really suprised to hear this i have driven all 55 models and a CL600 but i still have not got into a 65 i would think that v12tt with all that much more rwtq and rwhp would feel and be faster but what do i know. I do remember getting ripped on the hwy in my W209 03 CLK55 by a New body S65 boy was it a beast on the hwy!

I'm with Thericker on this one. I've seen a stage 1 E55 post 1/4 times that a stock SL65 would find respectable (11.7 on a negative DA day) but I think the much heavier SL55 would need more than stage 1 to hang with a stock SL65.

I'd have to disagree. I think the SL would be faster but just slightly. You have to think about the difference in weight. First, convertables are quite a bit heavier due to all the structual reinforcements needed. Second, the V12 weighs so much more than the V8. It's like the Suzuki GSX-R. The 750 is just as fast and faster around the corners as the 1000 due to the weight of the larger motor. It's all give and take. That's why the new Nissan GTR wasn't a V8 and they went with the V6 TT instead.

What kind of acceleration are we talking about:

0-60
0-100
0-150
30-160
60-130

All of these make a big difference especially the rollers where the 65 will shine better due to lack of losing traction.

I have both - it would be very, very close. I will admit my particular E55 is without question in the top percentile when it comes to power for it's mods - so not all E55s would fare as well as mine - but I know that my SL could not run away from my 55.

Once I start modding the 65 this winter, that will, of course, change

Sorry for taking the thread off topic with the SL55 comments. I didn't notice that the OP asked about an E55 stage 1 in particular. I guess I shouldn't post after late night hockey games!

Last time my buddy (stock sl65) and I raced, he was .2 quicker in the 1/4 and trapped 5 mile an hour faster. I would be in the lead until the last 1/8 when he would pull on me fairly hard. We were both on street tires and inthe 1.8x 60' range. I am slightly more than a stage 1 (airbox, h/e mods) but close enough.

As Vic mentioned...what marks are you trying to compare..(1/4 mile...0-100, 0-150). I would think run side by side from a roll... the SL65 would be faster. However, if you are running a 1/4 mile at the drags...and the Stage 1 E55 had drag radials and the SL65 was left with stock tires... I think it would be a toss up in the 1/4 mile....with the SL65 having a much higher (relatively speaking) trap speed...but the ET would be pretty close. Traction plays a huge part with these cars...but with the 65's it is even more profound. Now a 0-150 race...the SL65 would put some major distance on the E55 Stage 1.

+1 on the 65 eating up ground pretty quickly up top. 1/4 would be close.

Gotta the SL65 though looks amazing while the E is a sleeper thats what i love about it! Not as flashy and gets the job done well without too much attention!

I figured the SL65 was faster, a while back I ran a modded W211 E55 (frwy could hear the exhaust & @ about 55mph between multi-runs we had dropped our windows he said he had headers/tune) I pulled away w/little trouble during 3 runs) in my 600....

From a roll I don't think the 65 or 600 would have much trouble pulling away from the smaller 55. Exactly why the M5/M6 kills us up top. There is no replacement for displacement. Remember.... V12

Slightly off-topic, but how would a stage 1 E55 do against a stock M5/M6 0-150?
