Question 2.82 Differential Swap Questions

Hi, I wanted to swap into my car a factory 2.8x or 2.9x for the factory 2.65. The question I had was, from which models would I be able to find the 2.82 that swaps onto an R230 (I *think* the same differential as the E55)?

Basically only 2 choices out there and I was a little lost on what kinda car you have.

SL55 runs 2.82's and E/CLS runs 2.65's.

You can only change these back and forth as the diffs are identical and mount up perfect. You MIGHT be able to swap the gears back and forth but read below.

If you are talking about gears only , welcome to the hell of Benz modding. They won't provide us with any specs on how to shim in new gearing so you are kinda on your own. Not a good idea with cars that can hit 200mph and 11 sec 1/4's.

Don't forget with any gear change, you need to have your TCU flashed for the new gears or car goes limp instantly when it picks up new gearing.

Hope I answered some of your q's.

Thank you for the info! I have a 2004 SL600. I am pretty sure it is a 2.65 (anyway to be certain)?

Can the dealership reflash my TCU for me, or do I have to go aftermarket?

you have 2.65's

Honestly though dude, gearing is just not the way to go.

Not sure of your mods but if you wanna really feel the wrath of God, have your ECU/TCU modded by any of our tuners from LET to VRP to MHP and beyond.

ECU/TCU flash and your car is literally gonna run mid 11's to lower 11's with good traction. You just pop um out ship um and your car will become evil. FOR REAL, those V12's are the envy of all us 5.5r's

If you already have the mods, then not sure what the tell ya for more power.

Thanks! The only reason I was going to a 2.82 at all is that I am going to have a differential built up with a Quaife unit in it, while keeping the OEM unit intact. I was just trying to decide if it would be worth it for me to buy a 2.82 instead of a 2.65 as my starting point (both cost about the same)
