MY'05 E55 Amg
all w211s run hot the amgs especially, the thicker the oil the better cooling at high temps. i would never EVER put 10w40 in my e55 and the 63 i would assume the same as well. if you drive your beast tamely the thinner oil will still reduce the life span of your engine.

The AMG's do not run hot they run right at 200-210F and that's fine.

Nothing, you are absolutely fine They put in 10W40 because you don't need the extreme cold protection on a 5W40.
The smaller the number the thinner the oil.
The larger the number the thicker the oil.
The small number in front of the w is the oils COLD viscosity. The number after the w is the hot viscosity.

Not quite, thinner oil warms and cools quicker than ticker oil. 10w40 is good for most cars in US/EU, 5w40 is better for cars in colder climate. My guess on the 65's 0w40 is that their engines run much hotter than ours.

0,5, or 10 will not change the hot characteristic of the oil, just the cold flow ability of the oil.

Mercedes/AMG used to recommend 0W-40 for all their 63 engines, but in May of last year, they issued an update to take the 63 off the 0W-40 and put them on the 5W-40, which is hard to find in the U.S. I don't know why they issued the switch

If the dealer put in 10W-40, gi back and ask why they are not putting in the recommended 0W-40 or 5W-40.
If you put it in, then it gives MB a reason to reject an oil related failure under warrantee.
As for any specific damage to the engine, unlikely.

If the 0,5 & 10 are no's that determine cold temp viscosity then I should have no prob's as we rarely go below 70 degrees where I'm from. I will, however, confront the dealer as to why they used 10W40, instead of that recommended by AMG, as Jon suggested.
Thank you all.
