Going with a pulley this week..

Alright,
I've decided after 4 days of owning my E55 I'd like some more power .

I plan to get a pulley, but i'm stuck on which one to get? Is the ASP pulley a good pulley, or are there better ones? Is the pulley listed on their site now the 181mm one? Or should I get a RENNtech, Kleeman, or VRP?

Also,
It is pertinent for me to do the ECU too? I'm just wondering if it's necessary to do the pulley and ECU setup all at once - since it'll be over $2000...

Will the pulley be completely useless without the tune, or will it still add power? What type of gains have you guys seen with just doing the pulley, then later doing the tune?

Thanks!

I wouldnt do a pulley without a tune, if you change a part in the engine without letting the ecu (which basically controls the engine) know about it, you could possibly run into problems down the road. Whenever you change any part on a high dollar motor like this one you will always want to retune the ecu for the smoothest power delivery. Its not like a mustang cobra were you can just slap a fifty dollar pulley and an air intake on it and get 90 hp with no worries.

Also LET tuning will do a pulley ecu package for $1700

LET seems to be the pulley ECU combo of choice right now.

I gotta push ya to also include the LET heat exhanger system though. More boost is more heat and you WILL have blower shutdown as temps rise this Spring and Summer.

If VRP's ECU/Pulley combo was the same price which would you use?

Thanks for answering my questions guys. I have another one though:

Can I go with a tune from like ASP and not do the pulley yet and still get gains? I think they state their ECU tune on 93 octane puts the motor at 497hp, correct? Does that mean with the pulley too? Cause the pulley has separate HP numbers as well where its listed?

What i mean is will a stage 1 tune benefit me much? Then later I can add a pulley and have it reflashed to function with the aftermarket pulley?

Thanks

From what I hear you can even benefit from just a tune only but that claim of 497hp? that means that you would have only gained about 4hp.

Yeah, if VRP was same price, that would be a nice mod as well.

Just those friggin numbers from ChicagoX were WILD. Lower 11's.

other question:

ASP does not do tunes, just makes the pulley.

You can do a tune without the pulley, but gains are not all that great. Car will feel better though and at least it is something.

Pulley without a tune almost always is a flop. We had a guy put on an ASP and showed literally no gains as the stock ECU picked up the extra boost and pulled timing on him.

I say if you are gonna mod, go all out and snag the pulley and tune. Car will still run fine but she will just tire out quickly without a larger heat exchanger. (tire out meaning supercharger shutoff). You'll need to make heat exchanger your very next mod.

This topic has been covered significantly. You will get the most out of your car with the pulley/tune combo. The ASP Pulley/LET tune is the best value in my opinion as it is the cheapest and has proven to be one of the fastest stage 1 packages.

Don't the E55s have 469hp or so? Wouldn't that put it at about a 28hp gain? heh even though I know bhp numbers aren't always accurate.

Apparently the E55's are underrated for marketing purposes and have the same 493hp that the SL has. Some say that the different air intakes and exhaust intakes of the E55 relative to the SL contribute to some lost hp (not to mention an ECU update from MB that many say cut hp). The only way to tell for sure is a baseline dyno, especially there is some variability amongst E55's.

bone stock E55 AMG
there are few choices available...
go with the best one that fits ur budget
as far as ECU tune goes, first decide if u want local tune or don't mind shipping the ECU...
