E55 then E63, now back to an E55
Quite different cars.....

Personally, no.....
I love the power and use it daily, 90% of the time......
It depends how you drive, the S550's are great cruiser, and the electronics are phenomenal!

and how is your e55 not a cruiser? If you need the extra space then yes, but if not I gurantee you will miss the e55 right away

E55
my buddy has a s550 with amg sport package, its gorgeous and the new motor with 7 speed tranny runs surprisingly well. i really like that car. you will be very happy with its comfort, gadgets and bold looks. I say go for it! but i agree you will miss the rocket power of the e55.

yes the E55 is a cruiser as well but the S is a better one and i think there is no argument there. Thats exactly it, I am not sure if I will miss the power of the E55. Prices for 2007 S550's are in mid 50's now. Dealer I go to has a nice one with the AMG package for $59K I believe with 17K on the clock. Its awfully tempting.

Stay tuned...I am going to go for a test drive next week when the weather is better. Getting a ton of snow today apparently....

For me no as the E55 is as much luxury as I need and already plenty big and comfortable. Option wise, there really isn't much that comes on an S that can't be had on the E AMG for the same model year.

If you need room for a 6th person and a 4th pair of golf clubs, the S may be for you.

A better argument for an S would simply be that you want one and you are willing to give up the E55 to get it. That I can understand. Also, the S600 is the way to go as it won't be an interior downgrade to your E55. IIRC, the S550 interior was missing some of the leather, suede, etc, that comes standard on the E AMG making it less nice inside. The V12 S had all that leather back and then some.

I think it's a great idea to test drive it first. Last september I added 08 S550 4matic with AMG package to my beloved C55 and I love that car. If snow is an
issue and you want sportier look then 4matic with AMG package might be a combo for you. AMG package comes with 19" wheels and at first I thought I'd have to buy a dedicated set of snow wheels and tires but after small research I found 19" blizzaks snow tires that fit perfectly plus you don't have to worry about air pressure sensors. This winter is heavy on snow here in Chicago and the car drives like a tank. I use it as a DD and it's day and night in space and comfort compared to C55. I do have LET tune on my C55 and I was a bit worried regarding power of the S550 but after driving this car for 4 monthes I feel it has plenty and when driven in S mode provides alot of excitement. With almost 400 hp and tq and 7 speed transmission this car is extremely smooth and able. Let me know if I can be of any help and good luck with your decision!

Last summer we traded my wife's 2006 E55 on a 2008 S550, AMG package, pano and heavily optioned with the Designo option. Yes you will miss the power but the fit and finish and the ride quality plus the many gadgets on the S class have made us quickly forget the E55. That being said I still have a couple of 55's in my stable so when I want the power of the 55 motor I can still turn it on.

Wow, thats about a 50-55k drop in value in 2 years!!...I'd stay with the E55...To me S-class looks like a bloated pig...E55 much more classy

Thanks for all the input guys. I am going for a test drive this weekend or early next week. The new S is imply beautiful, specially with the AMG package. If I wanted to spend the money for a S600 I would go that route or an S63 but those are are still in the 90K range or higher. After just buying the range rover 6 months prior, I am trying to be a little sensible in this economy.
