Who builds upgraded axles for the E55?
I am considering the modifcation path that I want to go with my E55 and am curious about upgrading the axles to a stronger set. I have strange 35 spline gun drilled axles on my drag RX7, does Moser, Strange, etc...build upgraded axles for the 55? Or who does? I know I don't need axles quite that strong, but I have read about people snapping theirs with a good launch off a stall. Also, what kind of prices do they run for a decent set of axles for these cars?
I know alot of RX7 people used 300m chromoly axles for their modified RX7's. but they still broke....just not as often. Is that the same case with the current 55 axle builders, or does someone build a basically unbreakable axle that we can scratch off the list of vulnerable parts?
Thanks,
Scott

I believe chiromikey has broken one on a E55 without even having a high stall. I have a feeling that with higher stall converters being mor epopular we will be seeing more broken axles. FYI- they are about $1k each new from the dealer. A little less actually
Driveshaftshop will custom make you axles. I sent out a broken axle months ago to be built by another company and nothing has been done. If there is enough interest maybe we can talk DSS into a group buy. I have friends with BMWs that make 1000+hp with these axles and have yet to break them. Talk to Frank. Expect to pay ~$2k+. I haven;t tried Strange but Moser said they wouldn't.

I agree though that the AMG axles are quite tough.
Strong enough to propel Marko's 4600lb cl65 to mid 10's?
That is just torque on those axles that I really can comprehend.

I had the heavy duty axles (OEM) on my 2004 E55. I got them thru Evosport when they got me the AMG LSD. The AMG LSD was not compatible with my stock 2004 axles.
Apparently only the 2003's came with the heavy duty axles in the states- I could be wrong but this is what I gathered from Evosport when they got me the parts.
So you should be able to get them via Evo I would think.

Hmm 03 came with heavy duty axles. Are they thicker than the 04 and up ones. Maybe I can compare the 03 axles size with lane change and confirm this.

Interesting, I never knew this. Thanks for posting that info, sharing info is what helps the community. Do you know if they bolt onto the outside of the diff or slide into it? Any idea how many splines are on the hub end? If the AMG LSD was not compatible with your stock axles, the heavy duty axles may not fit 04+ E55's without also getting the LSD.
Since the 03's had heavy duty axles and no lsd, there might be two different sets- one for the regular diff and then one set compatible with the LSD.

Also if I am not mistaken, I think Chiro's axles did not snap, but actually spun the spline inside the diff which roasted everything.
I dunno, maybe I am wrong on that one.
Wish you could could try the AMG axles Ahmad. Be interesting how much they could handle on your car.
Saw your video BTW (southern transmission post) WOW, what a sound!!!

These are questions Im sure Brad or Simon at Evosport could answer. I just ordered the LSD and when it showed up it didnt fit the stock axles so they got the heavy duty ones from Germany.

I've been a Strange Engineering dealer for a couple of decades and believe they can and would make axles for our 55's at a price that's way more affordable than an OEM axle. Heck, we've even had them make axles for racing lawn mowers in the past.
That being said, I find it hard to believe that many people have a need for a Strange axle in their MB.

You guys may want to check out some of the stuff being built for the srt-8 cars. They have the same diff. as you. They use the same quaife unit. Either the axles could be direct bolt in or maybe the company making them would alter for your use.

Get me a sample and I'll get it to Strange for them to quote.
Still, does anybody know of broken axles in our 55's? If they aren't breaking, why upgrade to Strange or something else?
Price should be reasonable. They sell gun drilled 40 spline domestic axles for around $600 a pair.

Of course they don't have anything on the shelf and probably have never made one. But, they can make damn near anything if they have a sample.

"Hello,
I am looking for custom axles for my 2001 Mercedes CLK55. I have broken them repeatedly and need something that can hold the power better. Would you be able to make something for me and how much would it cost? Thank you,"
Notice how I said custom axles, and "make something".
I've broken 3 so far and haven't even sprayed it or launched higher than 1800 rpm yet, I wouldn't want axles for no reason. DSS said $2k for the pair to be made which is pricey for me. I was expecting ~$1k. You want me to send you an axle? I will go buy one from the junk yard and have it sent to you, just pm me your address. I sent my last broken ones to another company who has done absolutely nothing for almost 3 months now
