My car will be paid off within a year, and I will most likely keep it. I will by then have more than 90K miles and wont get much for it, but it still runs like a champ.

So, I was looking at SL and just can't believe what has happened to the value of 06 and 07 models. Worse than the beating the E55 has taken. So, it seems like now you can get an 06-07 SL600/55 in the $50K range with under 30K miles.

Can't imagine what they will cost in 6 months from now.

Get the SL65, auction prices is in the high 50s, low 60s range right now. It's a GREAT buy!

SL600
This will sound nutty, but I'm not sure I'd really want a SL65. Now that there's enough of them out there and people have played with them, the chatter you hear is that it's the slowest of the f/i SL group, because it's got major traction issues and an overly aggressive traction control system that you can't shut off. I don't know if AMG played with the gearing, or the diff, or what they messed with on the 65, but it seems to have backfired and a lot of folks swear that a regular 600tt with an ECU tune is actually quicker.

Also you gotta remember that on the SL's, the 600s got the AMG brakes as standard anyway. And since you can get a SL600tt for RIDICULOUS low prices now ($30k's on eBay), I'm not sure it makes sense to pay twice as much to get what may very well be a slower car. That's my $0.02 anyway.

Oh yeah...I should add...the new 2009 SL65's are pure sex, and I'd have one of those in a heartbeat. The 65 BS looks amazing too, and I figure on GenII they probably worked a lot of the kinks out, but $200k is way above my price range, so I'll admire from afar. GenI though, I haven't heard that many good things about.

Well, Camdon over on the R230 forum recently ran 1/4 mile in 11.27@123.5 with his stock SL65 on drag radials. Modified SL65s have run 10s. The most heavily modded SL55s and SL600s have run 11.2s but none have yet run a sub-11.

All the cars are traction limited so the best and worst 60' times are similar but there's a 0.6 second difference between the best and worst 60' times. A poorly launched SL65 will start off slower than a well launched SL55 or SL600 but that's really a driver issue, not a car issue.

That said, the SL600 is definitely the value choice of the bunch given its comparatively low cost to purchase and to mod.

FWIW....
