Running (too) hot?

Now that I have had my '03 E55 for a couple weeks... I notice that it seems to run hot. It has been in the 50's and 60's weather wise here out west and when driving, the temp stays just one or 2 marks below the 100c mark. But as soon as I come to a stop... it goes right to 100c. Is that normal for these cars? I do note that when the car was made a CPO they serviced the cooling system... don't know what they did... but maybe their is still air in the system. Is there an DYI for bleeding the cooling system?

Additionally, after blasting around the freeway 5 or 6 times the other day... with the weather at 69 degress, the supercharger did the famous shut down... that was waaay weird.

If you are referring to the temp monitor gauge on the right....that hardly ever moves from
it's standard normal operating temperature, even at traffic stand still.
And if you got the super charger shuts off, then I would get your cooling checked out

Get MB revised pump and you should be good to go with regard to the supercharger.

Ok... so once it gets up to operating temp... it should stay pretty constant? But what temp it that? Closer to 80 or 100c?

I was just replying to his comment on the supercharger shutting down after a couple WOT runs.

All I am tryin to say is that whether or not you are stock, cooling upgrades will prevent yer blower from ever shutting down again....that's all

I'm sure it'll come in handy if he decides to start modding later on too...I'm jus tryin to get him to start early...

Spend $145 bucks on a new intercooler pump. This is all you need.

So, the consensous is that this is an I/C pump issue and not a radiator/cooling system issue?

What temp does the guage typically read when things are running correctly?

From your avatar it looks like you already bought the 03 grey?? Do you own it yet? If not buy the car fast, you will love it. Your cooling problem is most likely a cheap fix.

-10c mod is a freebie and seconds in Star at the dealer too .

Works great. Basically kicks the fans on 10c earlier.

Print this out and take it to the stealer or he'll play dumb on ya.

The cooling system for the engine coolant and for the air-to-water intercooler are inter-connected from the factory, not separate.

Replacing that IC pump isn't going to do anything for your engine temps, all it will help is supercharger shut-off.

It sounds to me like your car is running normal. These cars run hot from the factory to control emissions.

Hey guys, just thought i'd chime in...

Although i don't own an AMG, i have have been experiencing the same problems recently on my 07 350...it constantly runs at 2 bars below 100, and the fans turns on and off constantly when not moving...sounds like a damn jet

in any event, i have grown up around these cars and have never experienced anything like it. I had a tire checked last week and took the opportunity to ask the serv writer if it was normal...for me, in chicago, its been an avg of 10 deg's for the past month so I can't imagine that the car needs to run the fan - it barely used to in the summer.

Nonetheless, they said that it's normal, and now i'm just super conscious about it - that is NOT to say that I trust the writer's opinion, I know something is off and i'm going to blow a gasket when something does go wrong..

I just need to take it to Indy but I don't have the time to drive down there.

I hate MB of Chicago.

Well... I put it into the shop today for the running hot and supercharger shut down.... I'll report what they say and do for the fix...

I asked the 'AMG expert' about the -10c fan mod and he didn't know anything about it... typical!!

Just took mine in this am for a tranny bug. Note, STAR lowering and -10 degree mod the SA cannot touch (record). You'll need to talk out the side of your mouth in a hush/hush tone and have a cool SA..keep trying.

This is a question I have. I have bought a Cm30 pump but did not install yet. I was planning on buying a H/E also but I don't plan on doing any performance mods. My supercharger has turned off on me repeated times and is my main concern. My question is do I need my H/E replaced or should I just replace my pump?

Got the car back... pump was bad... they fixed it... and they even did the
-10c mod. I was very suprised and happy. They said they did an internet search and found it after I mentioned it to the tech... So, all is good, the car runs nice and constant and just between the 80 and 100 marks... the car runs really hard now too....

Just do the pump and -10c. The H/E would be a good idea if you do a pulley mod etc. otherwise your fine
