Angela,
If you are afraid of the dealership surely there has to be a competent independent shop and/or mechanic who'd be able to fix this for you? I use the dealership a lot too but since it's obviously not warranty work there's gotta be someone in your area who can do the work and doesn't need MB's approval?
Just a thought...

On our CLK500 the drivers door handle stopped unlocking the door... But it would lock the door... My friend used the star machine to see that the "Actual Values" of the button and grab handle were just that.. Lock Button was good, Unlock handle was bad... I think the whole keyless door handle was $150 new from the dealer..... and installed in 10min without having to take the door panel off.... Not as bad as i was thinking...

Odd timing. My driver side door handle stopped working (unlocking from pulling on handle and locking from button) just the other day. I felt a little better seeing on the forum that this appears to be a relatively common occurrence. Went to dealer yesterday and they have the parts on order, hopefully to be fixed next week under warranty.

Had the same issue, entire driver side would not work, once in a while I'd get lucky and it would pop open, but I always had to close the car from the back door till the entire drive side just stopped working completely. Dealership replaced it under warranty no questions.
Once in a while I'd get a "key not detected" message, but I believe that's from the battery being low, or some type of electrical issue they're fixing now.

E55 then E63, now back to an E55
Mine is intermediate.
Generally works, occasionally can't pull on my handle to unlock car when approaching, sometimes use rear door, which sometimes doesn't do the trick so I use the key.
Other times, I cannot lock by pressing driver button, try rear door, which may or may not do the trick so again I use the key.
There is no rhyme or reason, and is very sporadic. Typically both functions work fine - I always start with driver door for lock/unlock, if that is unresponsive - my process moves to rear door for whatever feature needed them, and finally the key (which I definitely have to use sometimes).....
But it is not like they just don't work period. Because after not working- later in the day they will work just fine?

For those of you that had to replace the door handle, did you have to have the dealer version code the new part? On my old door handle only the lock button was working. After installing the new handle, neither the lock or the unlock works now. I don't think it's the door sensor because the rear door works just fine.
