E63 with Knocking Sound

I bought a used 2008 E63 several weeks ago with about 14,300 miles. After the car is warmed up, I can here a constant annoying knocking sound comming from near the brake and gas pedal area. Also the engine sounds kind of ruff with valve clap sounds when reved lightly in park. I have never heard other AMG 63 engines before. Does any one have the same problem or manybe not a problem?

I don't think it sounded like the one in youtube, but its more pronounced inside the vehicle near the gas/brake area. The other sound is the valve coming from the engine when reved in park.

i got the same problem and i know it has something to do with the exhaust dealership told me . they fixed it once and it went away . I got a knock upon start until the oil
temps warm up to about 70 . i think it has something to do with the oil pump for sure . also had a bad noise for a while dealership said it was nothing and 3 days later the tension pulley fell off

I have a similar sound in my C that I hear more pronounced in my cabin then with the hood up. I can only hear it at idle, red lights, parked. It happened for the first 1500 miles, then went away and now its back at 3000 miles.

That is exactly what is happening to my E63. Have you taken it to the dealer to see what it is? I want to wait till my next oil change, but if its not normal, then I'll have to see them real soon. It sounded like a mini pump or somthing right?

Hi
It happened twice. Both occasions,my car sat in the garage for a week or longer and it made the noise. My SA said that it is normal. It has been a while since it happened. MB regional tech also said there is nothing wrong with the car.
It has something to do with air pocket in the lifters or something. As air bleeds out, the noise will disappear.(This is what my SA told me)
The car runs great and it is not making the noise anymore.(Even if the car sits two weeks or more)

It is a common lifter problem on M156 engines. When sit for a while, the lifters bled out and rattle. I have heard it on several cars.

As far as I know there is no fix. Noise goes away after car is driven regularly. It typicall starts if the car sits for over a week.

When I use to sell MBs back in 2006, I woulld hear it on 63s that were sitting on dealer lot.

My e63 wagon has the same problem. I can hear it at idle. It was a lot smoother when I first got it. It is at the dealer now for the third time. The second time I brought it in they told me to run Techron though it three times to see if it would go away. It sounds a little like a diesel. Hope they can fix it. Turning the radio up on my $100,000 dollar wagon because I can’t stand the sound is not right…

Yeah, sounded like a mini diesel engine at the footwell area alright. I hope its not a problem. Let me know how your dealer says about yours. If its not good, I'll have to bring it in. Thanks.

Just picked up my wagon from the dealer. They said they found the problem and ordered a new set of lifters and will put them in next week.

That's not a knocking noise. Believe me, you don't want to hear that. It's tapping, as previously mentioned sounds like the lifters not getting enough oil at start up.

Ok tapping, sounds like a newer diesel. But not at start up or when cold.

So, you can only hear that tapping noise at idle when the car is warm? That's weird. If your car has warranty left, why not take it to the dealer?

Great to hear the dealer found the problem and is going to replace them. I heard others say the dealer says the sound is normal. At least I can point them where to start for my car. Let us know how the lifters are replaced.

They were quite reluctant to admit they even heard it. I brought it in four times.
The last time there were several customers standing around the car they all heard it.
At that point the service advisor had to step up.
They will put the lifters in no Tuesday. I hope that is the problem will report back next week.

Did your car make the noise all the time?
There were only two or three times for my car in two years.
