My car doesnot have this H/E

First of all I would like to thank Yacht Master, because I am using a PIC of his car.
Now my car is a 2003 E55, (July build date, Canadian spec) It does not have the small heat exchanger which i have marked in the pic below. I have a square H/E with a fan attached to it in the front of the passenger side wheel well behind the IC pump.
What does this small H/E cool and any ideas why I don't have it.

i think that is the oil cooler and they were added in the 04 and newer models.
i think thats why the 03 e55 is able to use a larger (7") HE replacement

I think I remember reading that it's an oil cooler found on later model cars

I have both

The HE you circled wasn't on the older 55s. All have the one with the fan.

Is that for motor oil or tranny fluid? I'll look it up in WIS and see where the tubing goes.

An oil cooler won't give you any noticeable performance gains. It's mainly just an added safety measure for extreme driving conditions. Not a requirement for the average street car.

We do not drive "average" street cars.

By that I meant anything sub 800whp or so.

But really, unless you're going on canyon runs or something I'd only say it would come in handy on at autocross or on a road course... sustained high temp/load conditions.

the small HE by the wheel well is the secondary oil cooler. this set up is similar to the ones now found on the BMW 335 with sport package, but they don't have the fan.

For turbo cars the oil temp is probably more important than IAT's.

in our case, IAT's is more important than oil temps.

I had the 7" core on my E55, and it was great. But i upgraded to smaller HE using the Spearco core. Probably same performe and smaller package.
