Stages of the E55.

This may be a newb question but... on the E55 what are the differences with the stages?

I see Stage 2 and Stage 3 and I have even seen Stage 5 E55.. What exactly are the differences between the stages? Thanks.

I would see it this way...

Stage 1- Pulley & Tune

Stage 2- Pulley, Tune, Headers & Heat Exchanger

Stage 3- Pulley, Headers, Tune, Heat Exchanger, 80 MM Throtle Body

Stage 4- Pulley, Headers, Tune, Heat Exchanger, 80 MM Throtle Body, Cams (well know for the famous Kleeman K4)

Stage 5- Pulley, Headers, Tune, Heat Exchanger, 80MM Throtle Body, Cams, Intake mods (Used by RennTech, they do CF Airbox and no Cams)

These days....they have variations of these mods by either putting long tube headers, 82Mm throtle body, meth injection, cold air intakes, Bigger Pulley, etc....but the core items are those. If I missed anything someone please chime in.

I would think that an intake mod would be lower on the list as it's an easy addition.

Has anyone figured out how to wire up a full stand alone EMS on these cars? Port/polish heads? Injectors? I'm also interested to hear at what level this blower is known to tap out at.

Don't mean to hijack or anything.

Not yet, It can be done. But would have to be used as a piggy back. You will lose all the features of the car other then running the engine pretty much.

From my understanding a 180ish mm pulley is the biggest you can physically put on the motor. The blower is good for now, it's more about keeping the charge temps cooler.

Yeah, maybe I should have specified that the ECU would still need to control various functionality outside of timing/fuel/etc. I'm surprised no shops have adapted something like a Motec on an E55.

So the 180mm pulley is the largest pulley you can run and the blower still isn't blowing hot air? I'm interested to see how much that would net with all the aforementioned mods.

As far as exhaust, I would think long tubes, cutting out the mufflers and resonators (or replacing them with 3" straight-thru pieces) would be as about as crazy as you could go, but I'm not even sure the overall piping diameter it runs from the factory.

Yep & aside from Stage 1, many of the manufacturers are different. Some do airbox at "2", some do cams at "3", TB at "4", etc. I suppose you could break each piece down & call it a stage & end up with about 6 or 7 stages if you counted the cooling system & LSD; 8 if you got into the systems with a real intercooler upgrade.

I would venture to say most modded cars out there are a 3 of one form or another with ECU/Pulley, Headers, then cooling or TB for 3.

Agreed. But I bet you as soon as you say a Kleemann Stage 4 EVERYONE and their mothers now what the car has.. What I am trying to say is it already has been defined and it is somewhat of a Benchmark aisde from just being a marketting technique, Same goes for a Rennetch Stage V. It is just recently that we have started developing more the stages of the E55.
