I get a whine/low whistling sound (almost like a slight vacuum leak sound) coming from the motor on my new E63. It's only noticeable when driving at slower speeds (coming to a stop sign, around slow city blocks, etc..) It's also noticeable in the garage in neutral if you increase/decrease rpms. It varies with rpm.

My SA had it checked out (MB of BH) and they said it was normal ("motor pump sound normal"?)

I did a Carfax for the hell of it when I bought the car (brand new; 18 miles on it) and apparently when it came in from the VPC the dealer replaced the drive belt tensioner pulley (another dealer where I bought it and which I refuse to ever go back to; kept jerking me around on the price.)

Anyway, do these motors make a sort of whine sound as you increase/decrease rpm (and really only noticeable when the car is in town, garages, etc..)?

I noticed the same thing. it hasn't made a difference in rpm/horse power.
it is not the transmission. it whine in part.
when you are on the highway and your motor was pulling 2500 rpm; then you notice it is pulling 3000rpm. your transmission is slipping

the reason it is more noticeable at low speed/idle...is because there is no wind/...noise.
it is still making the same noise no matter the speed/idle

I just did an inspection on mine. This whine seems new. When I shut off the engine I winds down like a electric motor. Anyway, the primary noise source seems to be the intake manifold. No change with RPM.
