Big Yay for Surrey Rolling Road - check my dyno results

Finally had a successful dyno run on the E55 at Surrey Rolling Road - cheers Charlie

At the crank...

and at the wheels...

Have had the car on two other rolling roads with unsuccessful top end readings, as it was spinning the rear wheels in 4th at 2900 rpm

I'm a happy boy now

481rwhp on dyno dynamics is staggering! You have a monster my friend. I do not know if those crank numbers are accurate though.

In my experience on dyno dynamics:

Stock 55k = 380-400rwhp
Pulley/HE/ECU = 420-435rwhp
Pulley/HE/ECU/TB/Headers = 460-470rwhp

Now the adjustments/corrections your operator is using may be different, since that is a pretty high number for your mods... but then again you just might have a STRONG car. Congrats in any event.

EDIT: He has the dyno in "Shootout Mode", as you can see on the bottom, so I believe those are the real deal Dyno Dynamics numbers.

Nice ride, I'm sure that thing rolls out!

As I've said before Dyno Dynamics, can be set to read higher than DynoJets, I've seen hundereds of Dynos in my day from both patforms. I guess we have a glut of factory freaks running on this board w/this being the 3rd or 4th Dyno Dynamics E55 stage 2 w/480+ rwhp LOL... At least Dynojets are consistant, I swear I see Dyno Dynamics readings all over the grid like Marcus. When set properly they do indeed read much lower than Dynojets. Though it appears the majority of Dyno Dynamics have now been set to read abnormally higher.

That's because many tuners apply "dynojet corrections" to DD dynos. It's usually between 13-15% correction but depends on how much they set. You can make a load based dyno say anything you want simply by changing the correction factor. You're right that when theyre corrected, it's usually higher than what an equivalent Dynojet would read.

I've seen EVERY dyno company have numbers all over the place. My shop does not use ShootOut mode on their DD so I am not familiar with how it affects numbers. Dyno numbers for the most part are kind of stupid to be quite honest... goto a track and tell us what you are trapping...

so what is most correct dyno to use? so it looks like his calculations show a 25% drivetrain lose?

Trap speeds can be misleading, too. Traction and a launch can make your trap vary pretty wildly.

The only real comparison between two cars is a heads up run or a dyno on the same dyno, on the same day.

Dyno Dynamics are load based and much better tuning tools. You can apply load or simulate driving conditions to get the tune perfect throughout the power band.

Dynojets are better for standard comparisons and posting up numbers, as they're the current US industry standard. But, being simple inertia dynos, aren't quite as sophisticated when it comes to dyno tuning.

There is no perfect way to show HP, not even two cars on the dyno on the same day. Trap speed is better than dyno because unlike the dyno, it reflects things like weight, gearing, etc. A lotus elise trapping 117mph and an E55 trapping 117mph from a roll will be almost even, even though they would make VERY different hp figures on a dyno.

Traction/etc will affect numbers downward, but not upward. You cannot spin, or launch poorly and get an excessively high trap speed. On a dyno you can inflate numbers, but you cannot significantly inflate a car's trap speed. It will vary a few MPH, but the best it does is the best it does. You cannot make a 115mph car trap 120mph, unless when he trapped 115mph he was spinning half way down the track or backed off the throttle.

Of course, with trap speed, there is DA, which again will only affect numbers down.

Actually, rolling off the line at a more relaxed pace without spinning will net you a better trap speed in my experience. If you stick a nice launch and cut a good 60ft and ET, your trap will actually be lower.

We're talking a measure of straight horsepower here - not weight, conditions, traction, or driving ability. The same dyno on the same day isn't entirely perfect, but it's the best comparison you can hope to get.

taurran,

A better 60 ft will always net a lower trap speed. Rolling off the line gently will net a higher trap speed. I am very well aware of that and acknowledged it in my first post. However you are talking about a few MPH at our levels. You aren't talking 10mph, or 15mph. You might trap 116 with a good launch, and 118 with a crappy one. Regardless of the variance, unlike a dyno which will just measure HP - trap speed will tell you how you stack up against a totally different car... like a stripped out modified Elise who makes crap HP on the dyno but because he weighs 2800lbs actually can put out a decent trap.

Above all, dyno's still often don't translate into real world results. I have seen cars that dyno high and get to the track only to run mediocre trap speeds/times. I have NEVER seen a car that traps well put down crappy numbers (assuming his car is running the same way it did when it trapped well).

I understand that. This is the difference between measuring how "powerful" and how "fast" a car is. Quick and fast are two different things entirely as well...

I ran my car on several dynojets when I first had my VR600 installed and they all read a little low, 470 ish - 480. I even had a dynojet tell me I was making 460 rwhp.... Afer these results I knew it was time for the track. After taking my car to the track a couple of times I trapped 123.7 with a 11.56. Not sure what that calculates out to in rwhp but I was definitely happy. As Marcus said, the track will let you know if your making power or not.

Are these Track #'s with your current mod list? Stg 2? I hope not?
60ft - 2.0041
330ft - 5.2687
1/8 ET - 7.9565
1/8 MPH 91.59
1000' ET 10.2068
1/4 ET - 12.2158
1/4 MPH - 116.25
116 mph Trap Speed is indicitive of an E55 that's not making 480+ rwhp on any dyno machine let alone a Dynodynamics w/proper settings, Stock E55's Trap this much, & few freaks actually Trap higher 117-118 in stock form.

With true 480+rwhp on Dynodynamics you should be trapping 122-124mph not 116mph

I disagree to a point. Trap speeds and ETs have all kinds of determining factors other than raw power. A dyno measures power, it's just comparing across platforms that isn't quite exact.

Dyno = engine power and environment
Track = all of the components of the car, environment, and driver rolled into one.

Just sayin'...
