Get the warranty from a MB Dealer if you can.
Too many things that could go wrong like electrics and mechanicals that would cost an arm and a leg real quick.

I got an extended warranty for $3500 that started to pay off when MB dealer said valve covers were leaking oil when I went in just to get a new key fob. they had to hook up to ecu to determine which # key fob to get me and they did a full routine check.. Funny too cause I had 8900 miles till Service C,..when I checked out, Service C said it was due in 21 days....

Buy as new, with the lowest mileage and best service history you can afford and I think having a warranty is a good idea on any AMG. One from MB is the best one to have.

What are you looking for: color, year, miles, etc.? Try to make a list of your wants and then sketch out your budget. Ebay motors may be an easy place to start but not necessarily the place to buy your car. Good luck in your search.

OK, you have already narrowed it down somewhat. Too add to what I wrote earlier, then buy a CPO (certified pre-owned) from a dealer and pay to extend the 12 month/100,000 mile CPO warranty for as long as you can. If the guidelines are the same as when I bought my CPO, any car qualifies as long as it has less than 75,000 miles and/or less than 7 years since the day it was sold as new. Therefore, you should be able to extend an '05 to '12 (give or take) and 100,000 miles.

Yes buying direct from Mercedes is the best bet, because only then it will be certified and have the warranty from MB available. Many times when MB Financial get the lease returns back, if the car has too much problems to repair, they would dump it at the auctions. Last week there was 4 C63 2008 going for $42k a pop ranging from 1,800 miles to 7,300 miles.

2004 E55 AMG; 1995 Porsche 993 Cab.
try a national search using the mercedes site:

http://www.mypreownedmercedes.com/

select CPO only, E class, Gasoline engine, AMG (in features) and from model year 2003.

Should get a few choices. Nice loaded one in Reno!

another question.
i have been reading about the MB ELW. is that a common route to go for cars that are not CPO.
i am finding some really good deals on some E55's, but they aren't CPO. should i be worried that there is a reason for that.

thanks

Watch for the lower priced E55s. Alot of times there are hidden wear and tear like brakes or tires needing a change. That alone can run you near 2K. Oil change and tune up, if done through the dealer, is also another 600-800 bucks. If you know what the vehicle needs you might be able to bargain with the seller. Also, don't mind the normal imperfections like swirls in the finish or curb rash on nice wheels. I got mine fully loaded for a very low price because there was alot of swirls from automatic carwashes and all rims had major curb rash, so the car was on the market for 6 months. The swirls are easily erased with a 12 dollar wax and the rim repair (4x 19" Brabus Monoblock VI) was a total of 300 dollars. Basically, noticeable flaws can be a real benefit while hidden problems can cost you so look for both.

the external defects im sure i can spot easily. i can not always count on the dealer or previous owner to keep up with maintenance. i will definitely be trying to keep a close on that stuff as i go shopping this week
