E55 vs M5

This morning I was driving my car to work and there is a M5 right in front of me at the red light. I was behind him so didnt really race him... just keep as fast as he drive. If stock M5 and stock E55 who will do better in 1/4 miles ? in the Youtube I only see M5Board videos..... (u know what I mean)

E55 469HP 516 torque
M5 500HP 383 torque

For only 31Hp less but with 133 more torque, we should able to smoke M5 in 1/4 miles without problem right ? I am talking stock cars. If compare numbers, E55 should be fast but why people only talk about M5.....

Anybody has raced with a M5 before ? experience ?

the e55 will surely smoke the m5 from a dig stock for stock, no questions asked! however once you start getting close to triple digits the m5's high reving v10 coupled to the 7 gear smg will take over

Actually, there are plenty of videos online showing 1/4 mile times of E55 in high 11s and low 12s while almost all the M5 videos and dragtimes are showing mid to high 12s and even low 13s.....

A healthy running E55 should have no problem what so ever beating an M5 in the 1/4 mile, but beyond the 1/4 mile, things will change quickly

But why after 100MPH M5 will start to catch up ? V10 .......
But for only 31HP difference, is V10 will make that much different ? also the 7speed will be so good after at high speed ? is easy to mod a V10 M5 ?

is not the engine as much as.. its the SMG3.. 7sp with aggressive gearing.

M5 is awesome car due to its high revving engine and gearing.. with the right driver... would be hard to beat.

To give you an idea of the difference on the high end power..

It takes an e55 over 24 seconds to reach 150
It takes a M5 just over 21 seconds to reach 150

think about the rate of speed and the time gap...

its not even close.

Cars are pretty even until they reach 3 digits...

Also keep in mind torque is fun but only gets you so far. In the end, it's horsepower and weight that factor into the results. An E55 will lead the race early on but the M5 will likely win a high speed run.

What hurts the E55 relative to the M5 is the Benz's gearing. Once the E55 shifts into its tall 4th gear, its acceleration really falls off compared to the M5's.

Well, I think race up to 1/4 mile is enough to prove E55, so 1/4 mile is about 120MPH..... anyways, is the 7speed from E500 is better tranny ? thats why they have it in E63 ...

Disagree strongly. That was a great rumor when the two came out but the timeslips tell a different story. Top end, yes. But, up to 120 it isn't even close. OP is talking about street racing. I've played with my cousin MANY times and I kill him light to light and even on rolling starts going about 60. He gets me from 120 -130 and up. As someone said, once we hit 4th, lag. That is also why i believe the guys that mess with gearing and end up needing 4th to get through the 1/4 end up with worse ets.

The "great" M5 isn't even a good dig against the E63. V10 to V8 both non-aspirated. I dunno of any BMW that was made to dig. They are all high revving with crappy low end.

I'm not sure how different the M5 is from the M6 from a dig, we've ran some tests with a friend's M6 vs my E63 and SL55 from a dig and from a roll. From a dig, both the E63 and SL55 destroyed the M6, but from a 40 mph roll, it was a different story: the M6 stayed very close..... about 105 mph, it started passing the SL55 quite strongly, then after 135 mph it started passing the E63 slowly.

A couple years ago we had a private drag day at Capitol.

I had my E55 with ~5k miles and another member brought their M5 with about the same mileage. Our cars were both bone stock. I don't remember the 100ths, but I ran a 12.1@115 with a 1.8 short and the M5 ran a 12.5@118 with a 2.1 short.

I was driving the E55 and M5.

Maybe it's just me and my history with Vtwins and muscle cars but ... Give me torque over HP ANYDAY for real world fun. Stump pulling torque is King on the street.

That is about right and maybe I have forgotten a bit about a stock E55k . Rolling runs are hard because different people do it different. I guess my point was to the OP's initial post of basically street blasts, which I take to be digs or slow rolling starts....

Everyone has mentioned the gearing and its huge- also the M5/M6 are truly manual cars with servo electric clutch so they suffer less in regards to drive train loss.

The problem with the M5/M6 is the car requires the driver to be on it at all times. Id personally say you need to be at 8/10ths or you will not get the most out of the car. We often read about street races where the AMG killed the M and I dont doubt it. You have to be planning your attack in the M versus a simple mash and go with the AMG. The M's sweet spot is 6k to 8k rpms while the AMG is shifting around that start point.

But then we see the rolling races on closed roads or in Mexico where the M's walk the AMG's at higher speeds and these are true too but they are planned races where the M driver hits the shifts close to or perfectly.

In the real world M drivers are not always in the right gear, or able to focus on perfect shifts since there are cars and other conditions that come into play.

As said, the 1/4 will almost always yield a win to the E55 stock vs stock IMO. But get a wide open stretch of road where the M can stretch its legs and its a much different story. Oh the exhaust note is most amazing on the S85.

Please try and tell me how u can actually do a dig race on normal roads with a modded stage 2 or more 55k?

I say this with confidence; u will not be able to go 75-80% of the throttle, so where is your advantage?

Vic,
I just noticed in your sig that you now have an IS-F? How do you like the car? Many mods/tuners available for it in the aftermarket?

I feather the throttle in. Sure, if I just mash it I simply spin. But if I lay into it smoothly enough, I am on it pretty good in the 60 footish distance.

I can't believe that this is even still being debated. It simple isn't even close. The Bimmers are high revvers. They just don't get going until they get the motor up to speed. That simple.

Neither the E55k NOR the M5 are new and NOBODY here has ever experienced anything different than what I am saying but you single me out and think you may even have a point?

This is straight ignorant and old. Love your M5 or whatever, but at least be realistic.

By the way, running 295 R rated tires in the rear doesn't hurt either.

E55 on a dig run, M5 on the highway, M5 on the mountain switchbacks

To translate the above into your question of the 1/4...E55 wins ET, M5 takes trap

Your worst nightmare...
While many say the M needs road to stretch it's legs...it has been proven numerous times, it's a matter of mods and tuning. They could definitely be walked above the 3 digit speeds.

The infamous sleeper X...2 heavy modded cars...one winner...AMG , Bring it!...

There is always something faster, and mods easily make that happen. Give the M props where its due, it kicks butt in high speed runs and Franks car was one of the fastest E55's ever. The average E55 will NOT walk the average M5 or M6 over triple digit speeds, proven and done. One race does not make the sampling IMO. Just trying to keep it real since you used my quote

You cant twist me, I owned every car you have had before you (55's and 65's) and know what they can and cant do/ I really enjoy my slow stable now more than ever even if it lacks an AMG. Remember Ive been around here for a long long time For every vid you post there is one of an M beating an AMG and a vette beating an M and a Pinto beating a Civic...

Yeah Id love to run your for sale Bison in my GT-R That would be a great race!!!

Do I sense some hostility in your voice...., That's right Vic, it's for sale...what's wrong with that?... Just selling it like you sold yours a few months back. No Biggie. Actually has a buyer. Never direspected your stable, mad props to you for swingin your shake and bake sig. Let me know when you need an extra hand to drive one of them. Your GT-R is fast and take nothing away from her.
