2010 Mercedes Benz AMG E63 Review article
Hey guys,
I know what I want for an early holiday gift. Mercedes Benz and AMG didn't mess around giving the E63 the same sharp teeth that the SL63 bore for the past year. And then backed it up with a strong jawed suspension. Then the AMG Ride Control gives this performance Mercedes proper comfort.
But still, nary a manual transmission in sight. 465 lbs. of torque and no clutch pedal to dance with. Are you guys interested in seeing an AMG that gives the full control to the driver? Does it or does it not matter? The AMG Speedshift is incredible fun, but sometimes you know what you want to do and the 518 hp beast you're driving isn't interested.
What are your thoughts?

Thanks!

My thoughts...they probably wouldn't sell enough manual cars to justify the tooling costs.
The E63 is a comfort rocket sled...a 500HP+ rocket sled, but one designed for cruising. Rowing the gears would provide serious entertainment, but for the vast majority of potential AMG 4-door owners out there, I can't help but think that the 7spd auto is the best choice. At least you can pop it into full "manual" mode to control the shifts at your command.
BTW if MBZ/AMG were to install a manual box into any of their cars, I'd guess that the C63 may provide the best platform, given the average C63 buyer demographics (skews younger, sportier, more inclined to wish for that clutch pedal and enjoy using it). That car or the CLK BS for its tracking capabilities.
Just my $0.02.

Who needs a manual gearbox? Give me a set of flappy paddles or a sequential any day.

I agree, MCT will be nice and a bonus for performance driving. And again I don't believe a true manual would sell anyway.

The new E63 has only 11hp more than the W211 W63 ? and even slower ?? W212 says 4.4 sec from 0-60 but the W211 was showed at 4.3 sec.
E55 4.5 sec
E63 4.3 sec w211
E63 4.4 sec w212 with better transmission and 11 hp +
For only 11 hp more and slower car that a very special car......
not to mention base price $87,700 it will be around $100k with options outdoor price.....

MB web used to show the E63 at 4.3 Sec and 55K at 4.5K
In real life, they are about the same but the new W212 E63 4.4 sec then
disapointed....... why bother pay $100K for the same performance car and getting more electronic trouble.

I'd love an E63 RS. No roof, coilovers instead of air suspension, less sound insulation, lightweight interior/stereo/seats, 6 spd manual with stickier lighter rims/rubber all around, improved software for 93 octane. Lose 400 lbs, 3600 pound rocket ship with 540 hp. Boo-yah! And yeah, I'd pay 100k for it. Z

MCT may be very, very good. Perhaps as good as BMW ///M's DCT-which is absolutely awesome in the M3.
But... Not only do I think they should at least offer a manual in the AMG cars, I think they should offer a clutch and box for C's, SL's, E's and CL's.

Sad to say, but you are right. Build quality probably not quite as good... I'm just guessing that the morale of the guys bolting those together right now not so good. Hearts probably aren't in it - if they are still making them. Plus, I went and checked one out, they just aren't as nice. A hair more legroom, from what I can tell. My seat's all the way back in both.

Car Whore
stuff like the plastic dome light is really killing that car though.
boy did they mess up with that. how much more would it have cost to use a bit better plastic and some LED lights in the dome lighting for the CTS-V? $5??
Come on!

I would personally be more interested in seeing MB revert back to forced induction rather than splitting hairs on whether or not it should have an automatic or manual transmission. I am a diehard manual transmission fan (even though my current lineup doesn't speak for it) but even if the 63 were to come in manual I would go for a supercharged CTS-V over it based on the engine alone.

question: what do you call a $93k chunk of cheap plastic?
answer: 2010 E63!
i was at the MB dealer today and spent some time in the showroom.
i did not drive the car, but dang - the interior is embarassing, especially for that kind of money. is my expectation really that unreasonable?
come on - how much for can it cost to use superior plastic/little extra leather $500, $1k? this is a terrable reflection on the MB brand.
