How do you deal with people who ask about your car?
How do you normally deal with people when it comes to them asking about your car?
I'm only 22 and am blessed enough to have a job that allows me to have the toys I have but it seems like every time someone asks what kind of car I drive- I always feel like a real a-hole talking about it. I am not bragging- just simply stating what kind of car it is. It's almost to the point that I don't even want to talk about it at all. Most of the time all I get are dirty looks (of jealousy?).
Do any of you have this same problem? Might not be a problem with you older owners that have friends with like cars but most of my friends are driving very cheap economical cars (civic, accord, camry, etc.) due to the fact that they are all about my age.
The only people I feel comfortable even talking about my car with are people who own similar high-end cars just because they are normally cooler about it and we have something in common and to talk about.

I just say I have a 220 AMG so they're confused, if they know then again like the person above said you're going to have a good conversation
Kind of a silly thread IMO

I bought my car 5yrs agao and people used to ask me all the time "hey nice car how much did that run you" and I would say 80k and they would follow it up with "oh you must be doing well to afford a car like that" It used to drive me nuts!

I get that for saying I paid $32k lol. If I said I paid $80k, they would call me rich. Hell, I still get the "rich" comment, especially when they see how I am dressed and/or my watches. It gets really old.

I drive my car to school and people always think that my parents bought it for me ( not knowing I have a good summer job) so I just say " ya sure they did" and walk away , but anyone at school who knows me good enough knows the truth so I dont really care.

Why do people ask you what type of car you drive?
Never yet had I sat around with friends and someone out of nowhere asked me what kind of car I drive. Usually my good friends already know what I drive and if there is someone around the group that does not know, they simply never ask.

If the subject comes up for me, it's usually regarding gas prices because my commute is so hellacious. I kinda feel like the OP, I don't like talking about the car to people cuz they always give me the stink-eye when they find out it's a Mercedes. Sometimes I'll say, a black car, sometimes I'll say a gas-guzzler, sometimes I'll say a sedan and often times they don't bother asking further. I don't even bother saying an AMG cuz it's pointless with most people.

Damn.... I don't know why this thread makes me feel old
**EDIT** and poor ![Big Grin](https://mbworld.org/forums/images/smilies/biggrin.gif)
But when someone ever asks me, I always said "just an e-class"... or "just a bimmer" w/o any need to further elaborate unless I know the person is a car freak... but then, I wouldn't worry what you worry since I put aside the e-class and only talk about mods and numbers.

That's the real deal- and I find it to be silly! I think I could drive a 10-year old C-class and would still get the same reaction. I don't know why people freak out when they think about a Mercedes. There's so many nicer/more expensive cars out there that I think it's more ignorance than anything. ![word](https://mbworld.org/forums/images/smilies/werd.gif)

i am 27 now, and all my friends know i am pretty well off so they just don't bother asking. new people do usually ask me what i do, etc. i say exactly this:
"I went to college for 6 yrs, got 2 degrees in engineering, i work for a bike shop part time, i started investing my money when i was 18, and i own a rental property on the University's campus. THATS how i afford all my toys. Any questions? Thanks."
That usually shuts up the stupid people, but starts a positive discussion with the intelligent folk.

Being 23 y/o I completely understand your position. Being around friends and such for me is no problem. Its being around work that gets me. I've already been been fired from Home depot when I owned my 540i (aaahemmmm from a general store manager who drove a 528i) I noticed the tension from the time I purchased it.
Where I work now I don't drive the benz in, but soon I will and fear all the questions ... Forget it with cops, thats a different topic...

Most of the time the people I hamg out with don't ask. I know the moment people see you drive a mb they have a certain set perception.
This is kinda off topic. This past wkend I was at a bar having a drink and wearing my amg hat with a crest logo in it. My female companion asked me why do you have a avacado tree embroidered on your hat... I was like wtf you dumb *****.

It doesn't bother me when people ask. I am proud to have a chance to drive a car like this and so I have no trouble talking about the car. If you're going to live your life driving nice whips all the time get use to the attention. People will stare at the car while you're on the freeway or driving in a mall parking lot (unless you live in Newport then nobody will notice you period).

SL600
Nobody ever asks about my knockaround SUV, but I get people all the time that come up and say "Wow, what a nice 126!" etc., and ditto with the SL600.
But I enjoy the conversations, they're usually people who are fans of those cars, and are paying me a compliment. The people who approach me are very nice, and usually MB enthusiasts. I don't take it as an affront, I'm not sure why being asked about your car would even bother people.
