Diff gears : 10 bolt / 12 bolt?

Hello again... back on my mission in sorting out better diff gears ... I have heard mention of gears available as either 10 bolt or 12 bolt. How can one tell which diff has which bolt arrangement without opening them up? Btw I will be using an SL55 donor diff .... but fitting a 12 bolt quaife ATB to it.

you can tell by the size of the half-axles: after 2003 axles are bigger in diameter (so called HAG 215 ) and to the bigger diameter corresponds a 12bolts differential.
therefore, you can fit that SL diff pinion+ring to a 12 bolt quaife diff only as long as also the ring has 12 bolts.

if the donor is older, it is 10 bolts and will not fit.
If you found pinion+ring as official spare parts means ... they are wrong !
because 12 bolts are not sold as replacing parts.

hope it's clear enough

What is the size of the two different axles? How can you tell visually, whithout taking apart the diff.?

I don't remember the exact size
but you can simply take a caliber and compare your axle's diameter with corresponding inlets on left and right side of the quaife differential you want to install or, if you don't have it yet, just compare with another newer car, maybe a 2005 E55.

Thanks v much. This is after they went from a bolt on drive shaft to push in type right? The donor diff is 230-351-03-05, I dont want to get this and then find the Quaife does not match the internal ring gear bolt arrangement. Its supposedly off an 2004/05 SL55... any more HELP welcome!!

Speaking of driveshaft.. Has anyone in an AMG ever considered having a custom carbon fiber driveshaft made?? It should save some rotating weight.

Think you are much better off going for lighter rims & brake discs... MUCH more bang for buck there in terms of reducing rotating weight.

Different kind of rotating weight.

Besides, why not do both?

that number seems to me the number of the box only and not the number of the complete differential box

My 03 CL55 shafts are approx. 33.30 mm. They look small.

if they are not less than that you should be OK with HAG215

smaller should be about 30mm only.
