Thanks! BTW if you don't mind, could you take a picture of the wheel well area with the TCU/EGS so I know how to properly remove it? It would help if for nothing else, getting my bearings straight.

Its REALLY easy hold the carpet in the front passenger foot well at the top (where it meets the glove box section) and pull forward ... You will expose a ally frame with some polystyrene in it. The Poly comes out of the frame and three plastic bolts hold this frame in place one on top and two at the bottom. Remove these and the whole ally frame can come away from the firewall side of the "floor".

All the ECU's are there now the EGS is v similar to the Parktronic unit but once there its simple to remove the unit.

Thanks for the info! I look forward to hearing how you work out.

BTW, a little research tells me that the same 12 bolt Quaife (QDF9V) is also used on the Dodge SRT8 Hemi cars. I looked at various diffs and, hell, they even have 'MADE IN GERMANY" and a tristar logo on the diff casing. See yourself: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/2006-...Q5fAccessories

I mention this as those cars are 3.06 or 3.08 gearing and (obviously) matte to the same quaife unit....

Can you confirm if the casing number matches the E55/SL55 casing? A 210 351 36 08

interesting finding .. becaus eits tru that, in principle, SRT8 should have the same big 215 axles

but our casing is 211 ...
and SL is 230 ...

that 210 number, together with the 209.. number on the label do not match

that's the number of the back cover only
which is the same both for E/CLS and SL
.. but, attention, it is the same also in the unit with small axles

Hmm, it might then be a situation in which we can 'harvest' ring and pinion gears and just rebuild them in our respective boxes.

Though, I was to understand the SL55 case was the same and that's why Steve was able to directly swap it in to his E55? Or did I missundertand?

when I was looking for the 306 I was on the point of just buying pinmion and crown ring from the local Chrysler parts store but too many issues remained open .. so I abandoned that route.

the SL case fits the same into Eclass without respect of axles size .. and this remains an open issue

if you are just looking for the SL 2.82 diff. box (12 bolts) its number should be
2303507014
( and this is the number that Steve should have.. but not written on the back cover)

Ok I got my '2.82' today. I say it in quotes because my diff reads 230 350 14 14/80? After so much trouble to source it, did I still get sold the wrong one (again).

Only way to be sure is to take back plate off and check ring gear etch on outer edge.

If you are worried about the casing fitting call MB and ask them which car your part number us matched to... I could swear my diff had markings on one side but no pics showed it up

My EGS went to Kleemann, got it back and I still had P0730 error (incorrect gear ratio). EGS gone back to Kleemann and should have it back Tues/Wed.

Can't wait!!!!

Any tricks to taking the cover off? I undid all the bolts and let it soak a bit with WD40....still stuck like glue.

I called MB per your recommendation, they said it was SL55....so unless some SL55's have a 10 bolt ring and others have a 12 bolt ring I think I should be ok?

I just pried it open with a screwdriver using a suitable hole / edge to lever off. Beware the cover is ally so this can break fairly easily - so be carefull.

When I bought mine I took a deep breath when I opened her up ... As I had no way of knowing if it was a 10 or 12 bolt.

I got lucky... I think the change to 12 bolt came around 04 ... So if it's a late model unit you should be fine...

mmhh. ..
45 14 would have sounded better than 14 14 (which is the early model)

sorry to telly you guys but
if you are looking for cheap mods, forget the differential swap

ps:
you can just check the diameter of side inserts for axles.
I already said, maybe in this or in the other thread opened by Stevebez, that the diameter corresponding to the 12 bolts unit is about 33-34mm.

So far it's not too bad £500 for the diff, €850 for the EGS - the Quaife being optional although - to me - for shorter gears necesary.

So for the price of a set of long tubes you got a diff with shorter gearing. And I still have my OEM diff to part out should I want to...

The process rather than the mod itself is a PITA... But I think
it will be worth it.

further, re-re you did yourself is something not cheap at all if you go to a shop or dealer ..

Counted them...10 bolts, not 12.

It only cost me 'under $750USD' and it was brand new SL55 2.82..but is completely useless for my needs now.

Yes... I found 2 originally one for £500 and one for £1150. The former had the lower miles oddly (aparently 5000) but who really knows... It looked perfect internally and externally.

Real sorry Auroraptor that you are not having any luck here....

Hang in there!!!

BTW please tell, just for record, how much is the diameter of 10bolts axles' insert

ps: are you factoring all connected costs that I see you changing the cost of that differential continuously ...

I didn't suffer less than you .. when I firstly got my wrong differential (I got a 10 bolts, too ... but it was an official order through the dealer ... I posted about it somewhere in this forum, but don't really want to remind that ..)

EGS Mod update.............

OK so have got Kleemann to do the EGS 2.82 gear ratio modification and also sharpen shifting speeds and lift load limits.

So far on the first attempt there was no change in the car - I still got the P0730 error (incorrect gear ratio). So it went back to K.

Second attempt the car would not crank at all. The EGS has gone back to them again. Not exactly sure what the issue is this time but something to do with the EGS having two EPROMS... and it seems both need to be modified, and perhaps even some synchronisation with the cars ECU is required (this is my thinking here). Another reason may be that under the same part number two different manufacturers of CPU processors are used. Code written for one CPU is not compatible with the other's units CPU etc... so the code cannot be universally written over from EGS to EGS. It seems each units' code has to be read and individually altered.

Anyhow ...this time they are going to desolder the EPROM and fit a socket and then we will be able to try a bunch of chips / programs in the cradle instead of shipping the EGS back and forth.

I have to say I am becoming more and more sceptical of EGS tuning. If the EGS cannot even be programmed to work with a different diff ratio how is it possible to sharpen shifting and lift load limits?

So far I know of two companies who offer this. Kleemann and MKB. There is suppossed to be another but cannot find them. I went with Kleemann because of their reputation on this board and because of the success of a fellow member has had with them in doing this mod.

I also discovered another member has had a terrible time in getting his car sorted.... and it is still not resolved. He went to a 3.06 ratio

I could just be unlucky etc and one of those "computer" glitches but its pretty disheartening......

Hopefully by Wednesday I'll have the EGS back with some programs to try out... feels like code is being changed with crossed fingers and I am a guinea pig... but that’s where we are left at mom. Hopefully once its working () we can learn more about what’s going on with these EGS's.

Ill update again later next week - hopefully with good news.

Imho after dooing this in Turbos, only point of doing thing is not to hit rev limiters....

Hope everything will sorted soon...and you will enjoy...
