loud, whining noise coming from left rear trunk....help!

2006 e55, 2008 r350, 1998 lexus es300
loud, whining noise coming from left rear trunk....help!
just came home and noticed a whining sound coming from trunk area.....left rear near the navigation unit. the unit itself is not warm. however, the felt just to the left of it is warm to the touch. there is also a plastic smell coming from the area. does anybody know what this could be? car has been trouble free. ideas?
