I just bought a good radar detector since you guys are convincing me to take the E. I was really hoping that was what you guys would say but now I can tell my wife the experts said so! haha

Take the Honda, and if something does happen in the Honda or the trip sucks, then you won't be blamed for the rest of your life.

I would say honda probably is more safe then the mercedes. And probably more comfortable too with the extra room. (assuming its the second gen pilot)

Good point -- If your pilot has DVD -- then take it !! Giving the kids that kind of entertanment can not be beat and no headaches for dad.

Good move on you to get a radar detector. 80 mph in the E55 is crawling. The E55 will reward you, the driver, but punish everyone else. good luck with your choice.

First week I owned it we did a 3300 mile vacation. Over 2 people, E55. 2 or under, 996 (3 if one of them is my 3 year old).
Explorer, even with the DVD system, sits in the garage and my 16 year old drives it.
Why buy it if you don't want to drive it!

Rent a minivan Not because trying to save mileage or what not... just because more room, you could put cheapest gas out there, and best of all... no need to wash the exterior and clean the interior after the trip...

Take the E:
1. You never know when you might need to pass a slow 18-wheeler on a two lane road.
2. Are there short entrance ramps where you are travelling? Take the E.
3. You'll improve your gas mileage stats. I used to like showing people my 18 mpg display and following it up with "she's a 12-second car", but then some shop reset the counter.

Take the E. It was meant to be driven. Use the miles for yourself and not the next owner

Is this for real? Take the E, 700 miles is nothing and the trunk is huge and the backseat perfectly ok.

Definitely take the E if that's where your heart lies. One 700 Mile trip is nothing, and you shouldn't sweat about the miles, as you bought the car to enjoy it. Just keep it clean and well maintained and the odometer reading will be nothing more than a random number.
I do 600 round trip miles almost every weekend, and don't drive my E for those, it bums me out as I'd like to spend more time in and with the car, but on a weekly basis I think that's a bit much, the car would be a torn up POS before I'd know it.
I do try and take it with me once every few months or so.
