Thanks Guys...
So how is this charged up? - is it in paralel with the main battery or completely seperately controlled / charged?
For example if I charge my main battery with all car leads off, only it charges - if I leave the car leads on will this battery be charged too, or do I specifically need to charge it in isolation?

no, the aux batt is charged by the alternator.
it is independent from the main batt, therefor eif you charge the main batt, the aux will not get charged.
Aux batt kicks in only when the main battery voltage goes below 11Volts and this function is regulated by a specific control module located close to your spare wheel/rear lights.
you can replace it with whatever 12V battery you want, who fits inside there. just make sure it has at least that peak amperage (170 A).
btw, ... if you need, you can fit into the car also a third battery, better if connected in series after the main battery, provided you put in between a relais or another multiple battery manager, like for example the old Orion MBR70 ... or something newer like a CPSr Rockford, a Jacobs Accuvolt, an Helix XXL ..

yeah ...
but I gave up the idea of a third batt
.. now I am working on a project for a very special lithium replacement of the main battery, able to put out at least thousands ampere for long enough

final result, if positive, will be LESS weight than our stock batt
will see .. if we can come up with the special battery control module we need to design ...
then, I'll be ready even for .... a KERS

I ordered a AGM Motorcycle battery AJC Brand replacement from Walmart $65 CAD.
This battery will work as an Auxiliary battery for 2005 E320 W211 OM648.
The only issue is the height is a couple of inches shorter than the factory but i used a piece of rubber to take up the space. Been using it for a month and no issues.
