my first time drag racing was at the al. intl raceway. its a ihra track and they basically let you run whatever you want. i saw a kenbell blown mustang doing 10.5 runs with no cage and any car could run with passengers if they wanted. helemts were rec. but not req. when i put my helmet on the track offical said he liked the fact i was wearing one . said it showed class! guess i represented the benz crowd well!!

Its all about attitude. Fortunately our cars are VERY stable and easy to control. I've run cars (c6 z06 is low 11s bone stock, had a few others...e isn't quite there...yet.) way past legal safety requirements. Usually much more successful on "test and tune" nights and especially with smaller crowds. Another alternative is running 1/8 mile passes on a 1/4 track to work on your launch technique and when you get a pass that feels good, go ahead and ride it out.
If the officials see you being responsible they'll usually look the other way. Of course I'm in TX and we have a few street cars running deep in the 9s and high 8s without cages...
