What to be expected at Brake Service

Hi everyone,

I have a couple of questions involving a brake service. I want to know how much is truth, and just dealers trying to make a couple extra bucks.

When buying the car I was told:
1. When the brakes come up for service they must replace the pads and the rotors at the same time as the pads are so soft and the rotors are so soft that they wear to quick. Is that the truth, as on most of my cars I have never needed to do the pads and the rotors everytime. Usually just the pads, and then once every 2-3times the rotors (50-60k miles). Any ideas?
2. Also, they said to replace the front and the rear, it would be $3000. Is this true? Excessive?
3. Do the front and the rear rotors both need to be replaced at the same time, or do they work on seperate schedules?

Thanks, I just want to make sure the dealer isn't "squeezing every penny".

-Dave

Personally, I'd tell them only replace those parts that need replacing. Only replace the rotors if they've reached minimum thickness. Most likely, you will only need to replace your front pads.

$3,000 are they kidding? I was just quoted $500 for pads and rotors for the front. Your quote seems excessive.

Keep in mind that the E63 got 2-piece floating rotors so they are going to cost SIGNIFICANTLY more than the 1-piece rotors on the E55.

My E63 front pads were replaced for approx $500 in March and the rears just replaced in Sept for slightly less. No disk work required yet.

Your from DC? Where did you get them done, I live in Silver Spring. Also, how many miles did you get out of the pads?

Thanks.

Yes, you are looking at $3000, for a complete brake service, that includes labor. Unless you have a friend, like I do that is a Parts Manager at American Service Center in Arlington, VA. He quoted me at $720 for the front rotors and $88 for the rears. With front pads $180 and the rears for $120 for my 07 E63. And I perform the brake service myself, and save lots of money doing it. I would suggest that you become very knowledgeable about your vehicle, and it's maintainence requirements. Or pay the consequences $$$$

So the last question I have is, do I really need to replace the rotors at the same time as the pads? Thanks.

Anybody with a E63 want to second Nova's opinion? I just want to be absolutely sure, because I know the dealer is going to try and pull one over on me.

Thanks.
