TOP SPEED
Hey guys I'm just curious what is the "safe" top speed of our cars is.... I was on a closed course..ha...and backed out at 180 and the car was still pulling hard. I really want to know what she'll do, but I don't want to be flipping backwards either......

Well if the Brabus E did 200+, I don't see a problem with our E's running that speed as well.
Just make sure you keep her steady at those speeds.

Here is a link of a good read on what they did to achieve speed.

All the production AMGs aside from the Black Series have inadequate downforce at high speeds. I'd be wary of trying to best 180. Where an E60 M5 remains planted and maneuverable at such speeds, the E55/E63/SL55 and the rest become very "floaty" in comparison due to suspension deficiencies, lack of a rear diffuser, rear lip and the like.

Agreed. I've had mine to 170+ indicated and it wasn't very "planted". Not overly nervous, but not particularly confidence inspiring either.

I would love to answer this, but I don't have any place to go over 100, much less top speed! Where did you get it up to 180?

Do you think front lip, rear lip, and defuser actually help?

With my setup the car pulls extremely strong, and dosent take long for that little speedo to get down that far, It was on a back road outside of Tijuana.

They make a huge difference, but only if functional and wind tunnel tested for the particular car. For instance, the rear diffusers on the C63 and the SL63 are just a waste of plastic, serving no aerodynamic purpose whatsoever. They look good but shouldn't be confused with the real thing.
The one on my sedan doesn't look like much but was the end product of millions of dollars of development. It allows the air to escape from under the vehicle rather than lifting it up.
I forget the exact figures, and they vary on each application, but small rear lips spoilers can add hundreds of pounds of downforce at triple digit speeds. I know they added a lip to the E63 but I'm not sure whether it is functional or not like on the M5. Hopefully.
Akademiks- for sure your SL600/55/65 would feel pretty good at high speeds. They are quality vehicles and are highly unlikely to take flight like a 1990s Corvette. It's just MB/AMG stopped short of fully matching dynamics with what's under the hood. The difference would be mostly felt when lane changing to avoid poor pavement or steering around something at high speeds, which granted can be hair-raising at the best of times, but much less so with adequate aero aids.
There's bean counters controlling all these big companies but I'm pleased that with the M5 we only got robbed of leather on the handrails, gray dials, an oval rearview mirror and big rear calipers, which look particularly silly on the 14.6" rear discs.

Just go for broke!! After all the E55 is a German car designed to cruise the Autobahn. I'm sure it'll go as fast as the engine can push it. Be safe and report the result.

With that being said, I've had it to 120 on the highway and it felt just fine. Nothing like the 180 of others.

This is about the fastest vid I have ever seen of a 55. Few around at this speed but have not seen faster yet...on vid at least.
What a madman. I thought 150-160mph was too fast for me.
Hits around 320kmh. Very close to the magic 200mph mark.

Mine pulls harder than that one..definitely gets up to speed faster, on a side note, I wouldn't try this with traction control off!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !
