Glycol leaking into the transmission.

Here's a write up (UK):

"The transmission oil cooler of automatics is sited in the radiator matrix, so failure can lead to coolant entering the transmission and destroying it, leaving the owner with a bill of £4k - £6k. MB responded that this fault only occurred in cars manufactured between 2000 - 2003 and only when a Valeo radiator is fitted, but has occurred in later cars. Officially the W211 VINs are Model 211.065/070/076/083/265/283. By August 2008 there was an epidemic of failures with fresh reports every couple of days, dealers quoting £11k to fix and MB usually refusing to pay which effectively writes off a 2003 E Class as scrap. Also affects 2004 registered E Class."

Valeos are a good replacement for the leaking factory radiators- a HUGE issue on the c32's. Check that forum for more info.

Well, I wanted to ask everyone's opinion, but the following email is giving me major cold feet. Last communication from the seller:
Hey there !

We have a problem actually. I have found out that there is a title
issue with the car. I have yet to register the car because I just
bought it a few weeks back and I have yet to register the car in
my name. Therefore the title is in the name of the previous
owner. I was under the impression that I could sell the car and
give the buyer the title and there would be no issue. I am now
being told the title most likely has to be in my name for me to
make the sale especially if the buyer is financing the car. I am
very sorry about this. Please give me a week or so to register
the car in my name so I can get a title in my name so I can then
transfer the title over to you. I will refund your deposit in the
meantime. I will call you about all this as soon as I am not
running around like a madman. I have a new job thats killing me
and I have a very sick grandma and have to fly home for the
holiday. I have not had one second to take a rest. I apologize for
the problem but will try to get it sorted out in a timely fashion.

Thanks !

Maybe everything is true, but still, makes me uneasy about the quick pump and dump of the car by him. I welcome any opinions, maybe I will just go get another SL.

The front bumper has paint peeling that no one mentioned here yet.

If he is going to play games take your deposit back and run.

Yeah, this is bs. I don't think you can sell a car you don't legally (titled) own(?)

So, is he saying he's the third owner? The car was last titled in NY. Back in March of this year. What? He just bought it a few minutes ago to resell? Does he have a reseller's license in CA?

Take your money back, call him out and keep looking.

Run!!!

Take your deposit back and run quickly, very quickly. To me this looks like some kind of salvage car that didn't hit carfax (if you pulled a carfax), and this guy is trying to peddle cars on the side. It is completely illegal to sell a car not titled in your name. Even dealers have their name on the title transfer history. This is typically called "jumping" a title.

The close up pictures of the back seat show that the paint on this car is totally scratched and swirled. The hood has 2 dents, the windshield wipers are screwed up, and there is paint chipping off on the lower valiance. Also, doesn't the hood look very off between the left headlinght and second light?

Put all of this together, the wheels being from a 2003 SL55, and the general disrepair of the car, and there is no way in hell that I would buy this car. This is a pig that was put back together.

Do yourself a favor - buy a higher mileage car, look at it, research it, and pay $23,000 - $24,000 for it if you want a bargain. You will save a ton of money in the long run. Even if you are financing the entire amount, the slight difference in payments, will save you a ton of money on the amount you will dump into this pig.

This is a car that would not even sell at the auctions. The only hope this guy has to sell this car is a non-educated Ebay buyer.

I recently bought a 2004 E55, and spent more than I thought I would. In the grand scheme, I thought it was worth it to have the right car that I know was well taken care. The higher sales price I paid, or the premium to pay for a local car, is much better than buying a turd and dumping a ton of money into it.

After all of the money this thing will take, it will still be a turd. See problem items in red below.

Just my opinion!

Judging by the looks of this turd, that front bumper cover didn't come off for upgrades!

Yeah, thanks for showing me the detailed pics, you guys are very kind to do so.

He voluntarily refunded my deposit today, but I did it through paypal so I was covered (I am a lawyer so I do take precautions).

May this thread rest in peace, as I hop skip and jump into looking for my second consecutive SL500.

I sincerely appreciate everyone's input.

Looks like the guy has the car back up for sale. Click on the OP link and look for "seller's other items."
