Renntech Pulley fell off?? Help! Shattered Keyway.
I guess I should have done some research before putting on an aftermarket pulley. I didn't find any negatives until after it happened and sifted through all the Sh^t on here. So to make it short and sweet, a mechanic and I installed a 178mm Renntech pulley plus ECU reflash. The thing was tightened to 135 pounds of torque. I have read somewhere that if you do not torque down to 150+90 degree it could pop off. Anyways, I went and drove it about and hammered it and the car let loose like at 40mph. Then the belt came off and the pulley fell right onto the fan. Luckily no damage and I was able to drive the 1/4 mile back to the mechanic with no power steering of anything. So I drove back, and we found out we shattered the keyway. The shattered key way got lodged between the timing gears. Tried knocking it out, but with no sucess. So now we have to remove all the crap in front of the gear plate, and remove it.
My main question is how often does this happen with aftermarket pulley's? Whether it be install error or pulley. I just don't want to damage the engine. I read some thread on here called Bad News about 15 pages of documented blame on whether it was the pulley or the install. This is not my concern. I am installing the pulley with the smaller belt size. I am thinking the factory belt might have help the 178mm pulley walk off. So I am putting the appropriate 51.4 inch belt to compensate for the smaller water pump pulley and larger crank pulley.
If I could get some input from anyone on here that is knowledgable about this dilema I am in, or any advice would be appreciated. I am not sure if accessing the timing chain gears from the bottom oil pan is a viable solution. Or must I take off all the fan radiator, and everything to get to the crank case cover. The keyway did not fuse to anything, it is just stuck between the gears behind the timing chain and is a b^tch to get at.
There is no one that works on Merc's in Vegas. So myself and a veteran mechanic are giving a Supermodel a C section. Thats just about what it feels like to cut open such a beautiful engine.
Thanks

well just got the keyway out without having to do anything else. THANK GOD! So its all going back together now with a longer Tempered Keyway. Just curious if anyone knows the correct belt size for a 178mm plus smaller water pump pulley?
Thanks

Might want to look into the problem a little more that thread that you read was mine. My mechanic found metal shavings in the oil after my pulley came off and the crank gear was fused onto the crank shaft to make a long story short I bought a whole now engine because it was the cheaper route.

yeah I read it, that seemed like the worst case scenario. Luckily the pulley came off right after I started the car, so there wasn't much heat built up. We where able to knock it out, and use a magnet to retrieve it. Everything turns and looks fine. I know it could of burn so much worse.

200nm of torque which equates to 150lb's plus a 90 degree pull. I found this out after the fact. I am going to torque and loctite it with a new bolt so it will never walk again. A simple pulley install turns into an almost clusterf%$ck. I wish I would have seen some of these postings earlier, but with all the constant threads on here its hard to filter out everything.

well thanks all for your info. It's strange that we all need to modify these cars. When stock they are faster then any 4 door on the road. I guess its gasonline in the veins, and nitrous for the brain. Speaking of Nitrous I pulled my zex kit off my Porsche GT3 and never got rid of it. I have seen some E55's that have adapted a Nitrous kit to these beasts. Wondering if its overkill. I figured with a forged bottom end, it couldn't hurt. Smoking sport bikes is allways amusing in a 4 door sedan.
