Is a re-tune necessary or can the computer compensate for the extra airflow?

After doing any engine mod you can benefit from a retune.

Anyone used maxbore service?

would be nice if we can find a shop here in cali that would do this mod..

probably $150 job... 3hrs at $50/hr

I'm looking to upgrade TB or shorty headers.. but i'm not sure what would be best approach.

headers would lower boost and would make power...

TB would increase air flow, but current exhaust manifolds are probably getting to their limit with a stage 1 car.

So... probably grinding the TB and getting headers would be ideal for me.

Just take out the front half shaft and leave the back one and use some upgraded screws with larger head to hold the plate in place, that will gives you all the flow you need. Don't touch the back half of the shaft, you need those threads.

usually up to 8-10% increase in area the ECU can adapt (especially our benz ECUs), but anything over that and you will need to reprogram ECU. This mod should be less than that threshold so it should be ok.

still an awesome mod -- I have a check engine light thou -- but you can do this nearly free mod and get about half the gains that the peps with 82mm TBs are getting -- and seems like those big TB are not flawless: huge price tag and having ECU problems

Nice mod and one to consider - I think we can do allot more at the air filter side ... no one really gone to town here yet ... think thats the next restriction in the chain.

yup- it really sucks but our ECUs are extremely sensitive and mine is throwing a CEL - not a big deal I guess-- only a light - i still have my added performance.

Earlier I was getting alot of codes -- I believe it was because I also grinded down the blade to a finer edge -- I have since replaced the blade with another stock one -- still getting a light but not certain it is the same code(s) -- I will need to get it checked later, when i feel like running to autozone.

I also bored out the TB itself a little -- but i kept the diameter the same at the blade's idle position ---So, there should not be any additional airflow through the blade at idle -

this is all theory -- evidently I underestimated the ultra-sensitive ECU

lastly - my TB could have some bad pins in the harness

Well, as you did a few things beyond the standard grind, it's up in the air as to what really is causing the CEL. Please keep us posted.

very true -- i would do it again if i could -- So, i am pretty satisfied with the results -- my friend will try my TB on his car to see if he likes it -- I am sure he will be making the same mod, shortly after he gets a test-run

Anyone have a guess as to how big of a pain it would be to pull an sl600 tb out to do this?

putting a thinner butterfly would be great. Also wondering if rounding on of the edges would help.

I think maxbore ports the entire TB housing, but that would probably only make sense if you can also port the plenum. Was thinking about having maxbore doing a stock TB for me, would love to see how thin the butterfly is he is using. On the website he says that it will get replaced

i thinned my blade but it threw too many codes -- i swapped it out for another stock blade-- its running pretty decent now ---- I only get problems when the car idles tooo long... i think my idle needsto be bumped up -- its around 600 but goes down to 550 sometimes ---- should be at 700.

Max bore dose replace the TB blade with a thinner one but he use's the stock shaft so there is a mix maxed set up with gaps were the blade is screwed down, No very impressed with the work he did on my 82mm tb.
