E63 Real World Reliability and Maintenance

As an illustration, I had lunch with my buddies that still sell Mercs at the dealer where I used to work and they told me a cautionary tale about an E55 AMG. A guy with an E55 was travelling across PA when suddenly the engine died. He got it towed into the dealership and it turns out that the car needed a new engine. I'm not sure what the issue was, but my buddies saw them bring the brand new engine into the shop. It was in a huge wooden crate. Cost? $40,000. Luckily the car was CPO'ed so he was ok.
I realize that stories like this are rare and that chances are you won't have to replace your engine, but you never know. If you have a warranty (CPO, ELW, or 3rd party), you're ok.
I am keeping my own advice in mind as I search for my next MB, hopefully a W211 E63 Wagon. This time, I won't delude myself into buying a non-CPO car and get a "great deal" on it, only to spend thousands upon thousands on the car after the warranty expires. Case in point, my wife's R500. Never again. CPO FTW!

The Best of Mercedes & AMG
I put it up for sale a couple of months ago but didn't get serious about it. Until a week ago I drove my friend's 2012 GT-R, and now all I can think of is trading in the E for one.

I read on MBWorld how to fix it and I did just that with just a junction box cover ($1.49) and some JB Weld. Work perfect and that problem will never happen again. They wanted to remove the whole mechanism and replace it, new glass and all. The real kicker is that had I let them, (and paid for it) the same problem would have occurred again later!

- windshield washer reservoir replaced
- glove compartment door damper fixed
- camshaft adjuster replaced
- fuel sender unit replaced TWICE (2012 and 2013)
Fortunately, all of th above were covers by MB. I do have a 3rd party warranty that lasts put to 2016/95k miles.
How's everyone else's long term real world reliability status?
-brakes done disc's and pad's all round
-wheel alignment done 3 time's
-getting a new battery and air suspension need's checked
Thinking of selling it and getting the new E63 Biturbo

How much you paid for brakes pads and rotors all around?
From my experience, the warranty was a "must have" for my S55, S600, R500...but was not necessary at all for my 02 E55, 06 CLK55 Cab...so I think it depends on the chassis/complexity of the electronics, esp the ABC on the W220, and the R-class being a new car (and built in the US vs Germany).
Wish me luck.
P.S. Opting for regular sunroon as the Pano cars I've driven all had quite a bit of rattling.
PL
But it was fine and the alighmnent was done with teh car switched on after being checked out.
Discs and pad's all round fitted by Merc was £2000
