My 2007 has around 59k on it as of today, and it has been fantastic. I have an extended aftermarket warranty that I paid $2,700 for that has been amazing. This car is awesome.

That price appears very similar to what I paid, was it a plan thru a credit union?

Not through a credit union. It was through the dealership that I bought the car from. I opted to pay extra for the high technology coverage that covers all of the extra electronics on these cars. It even covered my Keyless Go door handle a few weeks ago. Instead of a $650 repair, I paid my $100 deductible, and was on my way.

I would add my voice to those who urge potential AMG buyer to get a warranty. I sold MBs for a few years and the advice that I gave every customer was to make sure the car has a warranty. Especially with AMGs. Everything costs more on AMGs. The price of a CPO or ELW on an E-Class AMG (whether its an SLK55, C63, or any other AMG) is higher than the non-amg e-classes. This doesn't necessarily mean that the AMGs are less reliable than their non-AMG brethren (E350, for example), it means that AMGs cost more to fix.

As an illustration, I had lunch with my buddies that still sell Mercs at the dealer where I used to work and they told me a cautionary tale about an E55 AMG. A guy with an E55 was travelling across PA when suddenly the engine died. He got it towed into the dealership and it turns out that the car needed a new engine. I'm not sure what the issue was, but my buddies saw them bring the brand new engine into the shop. It was in a huge wooden crate. Cost? $40,000. Luckily the car was CPO'ed so he was ok.

I realize that stories like this are rare and that chances are you won't have to replace your engine, but you never know. If you have a warranty (CPO, ELW, or 3rd party), you're ok.

I am keeping my own advice in mind as I search for my next MB, hopefully a W211 E63 Wagon. This time, I won't delude myself into buying a non-CPO car and get a "great deal" on it, only to spend thousands upon thousands on the car after the warranty expires. Case in point, my wife's R500. Never again. CPO FTW!

IMO, Ext warranty is BS. I paid $3K and never even went to shop once for any repair, only oil change. E55 engine is about $10K + labor, you can find few of them around. If you go to dealer all the time, no matter if you own E350 or AMG will cost you ! I had E320 W210, E500 W211 and now E211 E55 for almost 3 years, W210 E55 for 6 months only basic maintenance. With $3K I paid for ext warranty, I could do and repair a lot of items. With a good indy shop airmatic suspension cost only $1500 with Arnott for both. Your friend has E55 engine died might be lack of service ? or he has heavy modded E55 ? those engine just don't die like this. Ext warranty is for people who has no idea about their car and just go directly to dealer. BTW, I paid for my 06 E55 for $32K 3 years ago and if really comes to need a new tranny for $5K i am OK with. My car MSRP was $93K fully load so even spend $20K down the road to fix, still worth it. Plus, my car is stock and i change tranny oil about 10K miles ago when i bought it, do well maintenance they should last.

Despite all, the 07-09 E63 is a very reliable platform. Not many issues associated with it, as compared to the E55, with it supercharger. Airmatic failures can be a issue on either E55 or E63 platforms. Don't get me wrong, this isn't a wide spread issue, as some might have suggested. The bigger issue here, is the electronics. Since these cars are so highly burden down with electronic gizmos, this creates a potential issue for failure.

Experiences may vary, but these cars aren't known for their absolute reliability and my M5 despite being relatively problem free still paid for its extended warranty and then some.

To each their own, this is the first time I have puchased an extended warranty on anything. The first week I got ESP failure caused by the steering wheel angle sensor failing. Cost was $500 covered by the warranty with zero deductible. So the the first week paid for 1/4 of the warranty. I am also free to enjoy the car without worrying about costly repairs.

I've had my 2007 E63 for a year now. 39k miles now. No mechanical problems whatsoever. I have been in love with this car for a long time.

I put it up for sale a couple of months ago but didn't get serious about it. Until a week ago I drove my friend's 2012 GT-R, and now all I can think of is trading in the E for one.

I paid about $41k for my E63 with half that many miles. Does it have a warranty?

It's okay, but at 65k miles it may need some serious maintenance items, brakes comes to mind which is very expensive. You also didn't list what options it has. If it were me I'd pass without a warranty. But that's just me.

keyless go, pano roof, navi, vent seats, parktronic (not sure if this is an option or standard). yeah brakes are costly from what I read, but a warranty wouldn't pick that up anyway.

What a joke, typical the dealer would say total replacement when we all know that's not usually the case. I took my car for pano repair, $6618, total roof replacement. Yeah right.
I read on MBWorld how to fix it and I did just that with just a junction box cover ($1.49) and some JB Weld. Work perfect and that problem will never happen again. They wanted to remove the whole mechanism and replace it, new glass and all. The real kicker is that had I let them, (and paid for it) the same problem would have occurred again later!

E63 AMG
Bought my 07 E63 as CPO back in 2010 with 25k miles. I now have 45k miles and I have had th following repairs since ownership:

- windshield washer reservoir replaced
- glove compartment door damper fixed
- camshaft adjuster replaced
- fuel sender unit replaced TWICE (2012 and 2013)

Fortunately, all of th above were covers by MB. I do have a 3rd party warranty that lasts put to 2016/95k miles.

How's everyone else's long term real world reliability status?

I have had my E63 for several years, and we drive around 20,000 miles per year....so we pile on the miles. At around 103,000 miles now it has been fantastic. Sure, there have been parts to replace....and many of those are not cheap (LOL!)....but you have to pay to play. I love this car, and would not trade it for anything....except maybe another E63. It really is that great. I had BMWs that were absolute nightmares, and the E63 has been a dream.

Hey bro, just curious why does your air suspension need to be checked? Is it dropping at times after sitting a few days?

How much you paid for brakes pads and rotors all around?

About to pull trigger on 07 E63 w/ 67k miles...drove strong and very clean, but no warranty left.
From my experience, the warranty was a "must have" for my S55, S600, R500...but was not necessary at all for my 02 E55, 06 CLK55 Cab...so I think it depends on the chassis/complexity of the electronics, esp the ABC on the W220, and the R-class being a new car (and built in the US vs Germany).
Wish me luck.
P.S. Opting for regular sunroon as the Pano cars I've driven all had quite a bit of rattling.

I had it checked because when the wheel alignment was getting done the suspension was correcting itself and knocking the alignment out.

But it was fine and the alighmnent was done with teh car switched on after being checked out.

Discs and pad's all round fitted by Merc was £2000

I'd say warranty due to the potential head bolt issue associated on the 6.3 AMG's engines between 2007-2011. ...then again I see this discussed more on the C63 side of the forums. If they have the same engine, wouldn't this also be an issue with the E63, SL63, CLK63 BS, CLS63 etc....???
