panorama sunroof question

Hi all,

shopping for an 09 e63 and test drove one today with the panorama sunroof...the car had the alcantara headliner, but I noticed on the covers under the glass panels it is not alcantara...is that the way it should be or was there something wrong/missing from this car?

Thanks

Wait I think I misread it the first time, are you talking about the two covers that fold up? If so then no mine are just regular cloth or whatever, only the headliner that is installed around the glass is alacantar

ya, I'm talking about the material that covers the glass itself...I guess it retracts, I'm not sure...but its not alcantara on the car I test drove. Perhaps it can't be because it retracts electrically? On the car with the regular sunroof, I believe the sunshade is made from alcantara.

Thanks,

mines not alcantara, the material that cover the pano sunroof retracts into a roll.

Correct, and I know exactly what you're referring to because I asked myself the same question.
On cars with no pano, cover underneath glass is alcantera - cars with pano, cover(s) under glass are like textile-ish

Main reason I did not get pano - not sure if the alcantera can't retract or what ?

My wife has a Designo S550 and those covers are alcantara. On her E55 the covers were cloth. Too bad they took a short cut on the E's.

Mine are cloth too. Don't worry, most people won't notice. If you think they are starting to notice it, just mash the gas pedal .

Are you correct, AMG didn't fit a alcantara cover for the panoramic roof, only the conventional sunroof. I had a 07 E350 with panoramic roof, and it had a cloth cover. But you would think, from the price we pay for an AMG, that it would have alcantara cover. That brings up another issue, for the owners of C63, why doesn't it have a alcantara headliner, instead of cloth. For the price it should come with it.

I thought mine were alcantara. They seem to match identically to the headliner. Maybe lkirchner has it on something. Do the designos have alcantara? Is it an "option"? I bet its less than a $100 difference in their cost too...

My car is an 07 E63 Designo Edition, and my sunshade is alcantara, but the panoramic sunroof, do not come with an alcantara sun blind. It isn't even offered as an option.

Thanks all for the responses. One more question...is the panorama sunroof really worth it? I hardly ever have people in the back seat and I see there have been some that have had mechanical problems with it. Has anyone had leaks or windnoise from it?

When I had my E350, the only issue was creaking it times, because the glass acts as the roof structure. So there is alot of flexing and twisting, that would normally happen with a steel roof. But, if wasn't the normal thing, it only happens on really rough and twisty roads with alot of bumps. but I wouldn't let this stop you from buying one. I really never used the entire roof, because it does get hot in the summer, you can have to tinted darker, to compensate. It does allow alot of light into the cabin, and is great on a nice summer night looking at the stars.

Don't get the Panorama roof. Mine has been nothing but trouble. LOTS of creaks and noise. This is a Mercedes - creaking and other indicators of compromised stuctural integrity are NOT acceptabe. I would never get this feature again. It's my main gripe about my car. The sunroof frame etc were replaced and after six months....more creaking... over anything less than perfect pavement.

Well- mine is fully loaded with every option -- When I was buying my car this was the #1 feature I wanted to have.... Since having the car -- it is the feature i use the least.... However, I would keep it over all the other features. It is beautiful -- and makes the car even more special ... that normal sunroof looks cheap and ordinary next to a pano. I have had no problems with it at all -- no creaks, leaks or noise... even when I am driving extremely fast. If your main concern is to run the fastest lap time or 1/4 mile -- dont get it -- it makes the car heavier where you dont want it... However, unlike some people on here -- I bought myself a Luxury supercar. Also, the pano looks extra sick on a white benz.... and people spend lots of $$$ trying to make their cars look nicer and unique -- this is one easy way to do it and it wont hurt the resale.

It is standard on the S class Designos but it should be the sticker on the Designo S class was almost $15,000. The beauty is on resale it adds about $1,000 to the trade in otr resale price---What a bargain.

The panoramic roofs are a nice option. I enjoyed mine, although some creak more than others. I can honestly say, mine was trouble free. Although it did get a little hot in the summer, but I would just close the sun shade. But, you do get the greenhouse effect. I can see the otherside of the issue, when it's broken, it big bucks to fix, if not under warranty. But Mercedes designed it to be trouble free for years. So for those who have experienced problems, there cars must have been built either on a Friday or Monday. You know those German's and their beer. LOL my .02 cents

I never had a problem or issues with my panoramic roof. I have a 16 month old son and it's his favorite features of the car especially when we're parking underneath a tree.

Bombed hah! I got shocked and awed with 2lbs of crap by a constipated Merc hating bird. It was a pain to get it out of the tracks, so I took it in for someone else to clean haha! But great point no worries of paint getting ruined!

As others have said, MB cheaped out with the E by not making the covers alcantra but they did the same with ENTIRE roof of the CLK BS which was even more of a strange move...at 100k and 130k MSRP should've been there. When you drive either though you soon forget

With that moan out the way, pano is a great feature. Looks unique and gives cabin an airy feel. A white E63 with pano or the new W221 in white with pano is a beautiful site....bit more weight but buy a Noble for the twisties...

another hidden benefit -- waxing and claying time is reduced !!! think about it -- no need to clay or wax a glass roof !!!
