The Future of Mercedes-Benz Revealed

Published Dec 15, 2009

Poor So-So Pretty Good Good Excellent PoorSo-SoPretty GoodGoodExcellent1 Rating 1 RatingABU DHABI — A new family of engines will emerge from Mercedes-Benz starting late next year that will rely heavily on turbocharging and direct injection to deliver gains in power, efficiency and CO2 reduction. That's the word from Dr. Thomas Weber, member of the board at Daimler AG Group Research & Mercedes-Benz Cars Development, who spoke to Inside Line at an event here held for the unveil of the 2011 Mercedes-Benz E-Class convertible.

The new engine class, dubbed MoVe for modular V6 and V8s, will power a raft of new products that will begin to arrive late next year. Among them are a fully redesigned CLS sedan, a facelifted R-Class people mover and a renamed and refreshed S-Class coupe, formerly known as the CL coupe.

Dr. Weber said that all eight-cylinder Mercedes-Benz models will be turbocharged by the 2011 model year and that includes the high-performance AMG variants. The current 6.2-liter normally-aspirated V8 designed and built by AMG will be replaced by a 5.5-liter, twin-turbo V8 with direct injection.

Non-AMG Mercedes-Benz models will get either a slightly smaller-displacement twin-turbo V8, a twin-turbo V6 or a normally-aspirated 3.5-liter V6. All will use direct injection and most will be designed to integrate with hybrid drive systems.

In 2011, Weber said a C-Class coupe will join a facelifted C-Class lineup. More news will arrive in 2011 with the complete redesigns of the SLK roadster and ML sport utility vehicle. There's even a diesel/electric E-Class Bluetec Hybrid scheduled for production.

Finally, in 2012, an all-new SL roadster arrives. It will be offered in both standard and AMG versions, so it will make full use of the company's new engine technologies to reduce fuel consumption and improve emissions.

Inside Line says: If you like the idea of a big-block Mercedes-Benz better buy an AMG now. Come 2011 it's all about twin turbos and it won't be the same. — Scott Oldham, Editor in Chief

Kind of a letdown for those who have purchased the 2010 e63 series. But to each their own. I can't wait!

I don't necessarily see this as a bad thing. More like the opposite...

I read in UK's CAR Magazine that the 63 designation will be retained for the new 5.5 Twin-Turbo cars as Mercedes has built up consumer affinity for the number "63".

I'd be pretty bummed out. Makes me feel okay that I picked up a heavily discounted 2009 W211 instead of risking on a new W212. Now I can feel good using this one up and moving up to the "all new E55" when the time comes. Or maybe a F10 M5. Anyway, now BMW Ms and MB AMGs will be super competitive.

This made my day!

This is exactly what I have been waiting for. My lease expires May 2011 so by then the 2011 model with the TT-V8 should be out.

There's nothing wrong with the 212 E63, it has the SL63's transmission and better handling. All it needs is a bigger bump in horsepower.

That's only because the 63's were a big step down given the timeline from 2003 to 2008...BMW went to twin turbos, Mercedes lost torque and modability.

also keep in mind the v6 TT config would be a nice choice.

I would see nothing wrong with a C350 sport with 3.5 v6 TT or E350 sport 3.5v6TT..

.. force induction would be available to just about every price range, this will create more tuning possibilities and options.

I knew it....... that's what I've been waiting for as well. Hopefully, we'll see close to 600 hp if not more

If the twin turbos are coming for model year 2011, does that mean the W212 E63 will only stay for one model year then get discontinued?

From a marketing standpoint MB should keep the 6.2 until the next refresh so they don't lose customers who wait for the TT V8 E class AMG in lieu of the getting the 6.2. However it is hard to quantify the potential loss since most AMG buyers don't care about modding their car, they just want an AMG.

I hope it changes for the 2011 model year because I don't want to be "stuck" with another 6.2 knowing the TT will come out the following year.

a 6.2 TT would be far better than a 5.5, The SLS motor is a one off?

Long Live the 73 motor but add twin turbo for 2012!!! Hell , make it a V8 but bring back the 7.3 Litres!!!

The extremely rare SL73 AMG was sold through AMG in 1995, and at 525 bhp (391 kW) it offered the most powerful V12 engine ever put into an SL up to that time. After a brief gap, the SL73 was offered again from 1998 to 2001, although the engine was slightly updated to be more reliable. The same 7.3L V12 was later used by Pagani in the Zonda. A total of 85 SL73 AMG roadsters were built. The SL73 was briefly reintroduced in September 1999 following the SL's end of life facelift and a limited number were produced up until December 2001. The facelifted SL73 is the car that appears in the picture (below left).
Even more rare is the Mercedes-Benz SL70 AMG which was powered by a 7.0 L V12 engine.

u need to give it a rest w/ the 55 vs 63 BS.

not every is into tuning (modding) their ride. u don't think people that bought an E63 can't afford an E55? a lot of people don't like buying used cars so their stuck w/ whatever engine is in the new models.

just my $.02.
