A few toys & 07' E350 4matic w/AMG sport packg.
They also say normal models with be turbo-ed V8s from 4.5-5.0, I bet it will be the GL450's motor turbo-ed.
That's crazy, I see they are following the trend BMW is.
Audi dropped the V8 S4 situation and when to V6 S/C S4 which is really weird...

I for one am ecstatic that they are going FI again. Can't wait.
Not entirely clear, but it looks like the car is staying the same, but for the motor. Can anybody confirm?

That's the exact question I have- it seems like the old 5.5 liter unchanged would be a great engine choice. Can anyone give differences (besides compression) between the old 5.5 liter vs the newer 6.2 liter on the 63 series cars?? Block/piston/cam info..

I personally think that the 6.2 would be a great candidate for twin turbos, 4 valve , twin cam, large displacement! Does anyone else think this as well?

I previously posted this in another thread. I'm not for or against this, I just thought our members should be aware of the direction that Mercedes Benz and AMG are heading.
There is no replacement for displacement, in my opinion. While Audi and BMW have embraced turbocharging, Mercedes has -- by and large -- stuck with large displacement, naturally aspirated engines. However, If a recent report is to be believed, that's set to change late next year. If you like the size, simplicity and sound of the normally aspirated 6.2-liter V8 found throughout the current Mercedes-Benz AMG lineup, better buy one soon, cuz it's about to get the ax. Dr. Thomas Weber, member of the board at Daimler AG Group Research & Mercedes-Benz Cars Development, told Inside Line that the current engine will be replaced by a twin-turbo 5.5-liter V8 starting late next year. No horsepower numbers were discussed, but given the current trend toward more usable, more environmentally friendly horsepower, don't expect numbers much higher than those for the current engines. AMG vehicles won't be the only Mercedes models getting turbocharged next year. According to Dr. Weber, all 2011 Mercedes-Benz models with V8 engines will be turbocharged. Again, no specifics were discussed, but look for standard Mercedes-Benz vehicles to get a twin-turbo V8 in the 4.5- to 5.0-liter range. Expect to see the official announcement at the 2010 Paris Auto Show next September. And that's not all. Under Mercedes' reported plan to downsize its powertrains, all V8s will shrink in size for 2011, with turbocharging making up for the power deficit. If true the move to smaller displacement engines would help increase efficiency while also reducing CO2 emissions. While the report only mentions V8 engines, we're guessing there's a good chance Mercedes could use more turbos in its V6 product lineup as well. The move will help the German automaker meet more strict emissions laws in both Europe and the U.S., while giving the torque-craving masses what they need.

Personally, I would like to see AMG put a supercharger or twin turbos on the 6.2!! I believe that the block can handle the added hp and the tranny can handle the torque that this mariage would create? If this isn't an AMG future development, then what will happen with the 6.2 then? I don't want to see this beautiful N/A engine die by the waste side, not becuase I own one but because it's a great engine?

I believe I read a thread here stating that the 6.2 was originally created with FI in mind. If that's true, most likely the 5.5TT will be a version of the 6.2 with lower displacement.

It is NOT a M156 based motor and has traditional valve train not tappets like in the M156

My understanding was that the 5.5L twin turbo engine is actually Mercedes's newly developed 550 engine (used in all the 550 models) with modified parts and forced induction

04 - 06 e55 Wagon - looking for
The dealership I visited today said the 5.5 turbo motors were going into the S series rather than the E series ![nix](https://mbworld.org/forums/images/smilies/nixweiss.gif)
That said, four allocation spots are opening up for 2011 AMG wagons in 7 mos. $5K deposit, special order only.

Honestly, i dont foresee the new 5.5TT being that much more in HP than what the 6.2 motors have. Maybe 30-40 hp more? Torque will be way up, but then the question is the transmission. I'd rather sit in a naturally aspirated engine racing around than a Turbo or Supercharged engine, strictly on concerns about the loss of power due to heat(MB intercoolers are notoriously underpowered).
The 6.2 engines with an ECU, new airbox, headers, pulley and freer exhaust would push close to 600hp. The 6.2 is a race engine detuned for consumers. Imagine if they put new crankshafts and throttle bodies in that puppy also. 650 hp? That would be insane and at that point, the engine is a few engineering tricks away from an F1 motor.

Its probably the 550 motor just boosted. The 5.5L V8 has been Mercedes most versatile engine so it would be stupid to assume they are just going to drop it. Now whether its going to have M156 engine code or something new, that's a different question. However, it will most likely share most (if not all) of the same architecture.

Plus Daimler doesn't have a lot of cash right now for any big time new engine R+D. Boost the 5.5, market it well, and call it a day.
