Radiator - is it normal for the anti-freeze to decrease?

So I put some Mercedes Anti-freeze about 2 weeks ago, and it was filled to the top. (To the rubber lining where it is recommended.)

I opened up the radiator cap to check where the level was, and it had gone down about half an inch or so.

Is this normal? Does some of it evaporate? I see some white residue on my radiator tank area too. It's been very cold lately, so I am not sure if that causes it to act differently.

Or do I possibly have a minor leak?

common problem on 03 cars - coolant leaks into transmission fluid system, because the transmission fluid is cooled via the radiator.

+1

catch this problem early before you need a gearbox rebuild. Coolant fluid level dropping is not ok.

your SIG says 2001 model, is the car an S55 kompressor?

Coolant is a sealed system - in theory, the level should never change unless you have a leak or the problem mentioned above.

It's not the kompressor engine, the 55 Naturally Aspired one.

I asked a mechanic today, and he said it could just be normal due to the temperature change - the level of the fluid can fluctuate a little bit if the car is warm or cold. Does that make sense?

E55, Supercharged Z4 (sold)
I thought the same thing (temp change) on my Z4 and it turned out to be a leak in a reservoir. Best thing to do is get under it somehow and take a look.

When I installed my CM30 pump it had a little crack and it was leaking. I tried sealing it but I have my coolant light showing now. I saw the drip when I installed it and after sealing it stopped. I dont remember what I used to seal it ..
