Contemplating a Civic as a daily beater

Hi all,

I currently live in Culver city (Los Angeles) My business is constantly taking me to San Diego and Palm springs on a weekly or bi-weekly basis. Some weeks I will have to be in San Diego 3-4 times per week. There are times when a hotel room will be necessary and there will times that I will need to get back home to then return the following day.

The commute is probably 220-260 miles roundtrip with multiple stops while in San Diego. in total, the trip may take 350 miles.

I don't have a big budget!
There is a new 2010 civic for $159 for 36 months w/ $1,400 due at signing.

It would not cost that much extra for insurance for the year. I would get 60% better gas millage. And I would not be putting a bunch of miles on my new (used) CLS.

What do you guys think?

Thanks for you input.

unless you have a really good mileage allocation on the lease, it sounds like your mileage would likely go over. perhaps buy a used one and run that sucker to the ground (which should be at least 200k miles.

on a seperate note, did you buy your iwc cls from Fletcher? there was an iwc model there I almost bought, but decided to get the E63 instead. nice car!

The lease special is for 12,000 per year. I would only be driving it maybe 10 because I will be driving the AMG Thursday --- Sunday!

And no, I bought the IWC from MB or Southbay earlier this month.

I assume you did the math, i.e., is the expense of leasing (plus insurance and reg) a new Civic going to actually offset the expense of putting miles on the CLS.

The real downside is you're trading a super comfortable and SAFE ride on the freeway with the CLS for traveling in a Civic. That's a shame because the CLS is so at home on the freeway. Plus the freeway miles won't hurt it.

I'd personally look for a used something-else-besides-a-Civic as a second car. And as Kenny says drive it 'till it dies.

somehow i think the difference between driving a civic and the cls will make you hate you mon-wed commuting even more. I drive a G37 and CLS63 right now cause i haven't gotten rid of my G37 yet. I really miss my CLS when i drive the G37, and the G37 is a really fun car to drive. Just something to think about.

Btw, was the CLS55 you bought, is it the one in grey? I had thought about looking at that one, but every time i go to buy a car at south-bay, i end up yelling at the sales manager and walking out. Personally I think they are all idiots. However, their service department (at least the Manhattan Beach one) is top notch!

I'm in the same boat. 200+ miles daily, really adding on the miles.
Have a Maxima, problem is, I keep driving the E, why? Do I need to explain?.............

haven't been to south bay, but I don't think it compares to the horrible service at Laguna Niguel- I litterally yelled at the sales manager, following suit to the general manager-

Fletcher had an IWC CLS55 and they were asking an arm and a leg without the watch! Flectcher's customer service was top notch. really stand up guys- after the sale, the gm walked up to us and thanked us for the purchase.

Thanks for all your input.

I know, can I bare driving around in a civic when having a 580hp beast in the garage?

I'm trying to deflect milage away from the CLS. I have 26,000 miles currently and putting on 500-700 extra miles (on top of my normal driving) a week doesn't sound so good.

Buying a true, used beater doesn't sound appealing. If I were to pull the trigger, leasing a brand new car would have to be the right choice. I don't want to deal with any major / minor car problems.

I'm a big fan of having a secondary vehicle. We have TONS of salt on the roads here in the winter and i prefer to keep me the beast in the garage and drive the chevy diesel through that stuff. Also, nice to have in case the primary car is down for some reason.

Why buy a new car for a beater? Get a used truck and use it to haul...

Cha Ching! I have an '02 Bonneville, that I bought for my daughter to practice on, I also use it for dirty jobs, such as going to Hoe Depot or Lowes, and public events where parking is sketchy.

My son will be getting his permit soon, and there are a lot of cheap F-150's and Silverado's out there, with the V6 engine. Great utility, when I need it. Cash and drive is the way to go.

If you don't want a truck, look for an '02 - '04 Pontiac Boneville or Grand Prix, with the 3800 Gen II engine, bullet proof mechanical reliability, good fuel milage and occupant protection.

def get a 2nd car as a commuter, esp with if you dont want to put 200-260 miles/week on the CLS. i still use my 99 civic si as my dd that i had prior to my e500. And drive the benz fri-sun... also drive the civic when its the 2nd day of snow until it melts since the salt is all over the road.

Just because its a Civic does not mean it isnt safe and comfortable. Im sure its just as safe if not safer than a CLS. Honda prides on safety and efficiency.

Guys,
I didn't mean to mislead....580-600hp is my goal. That was basically what I had in my previous W211.

Let the modding begin on the CLS

I can't lease a used truck. Plus, I am looking for extreme reliability with a warranty.

I don't think I could see myself in a Boneville! I actually don't mind the subdued look of it although why would I buy a car with 60+ miles on it for the same price of leasing a brand new Civic for 3 years?

Dammit, I hate seeing my typos quoted, That should be Bonneville not Boneville. Is that how much they are selling for out there? I picked mine up for $3900, in great condition with 87K on the clock. The only thing I've had to do on that car is change the oil and filter, it now has 105k on it.

How about a V6 camry? They're surprisingly quick, get good mpgs, blend in like they're the most popular car on the road which helps you hide from the CHP, bigger than a civic so I feel like they're safer and more comfortable and it sound like you're in sales and a camry will comfortable fit adults in the back.

I definitely like have a 2nd....or 3rd car. I daily the WS6 unless I feel like driving a car faster than my sports car.

X2board is all over it. GM 3.8L ftw. Great reliability, comfortable and cheap on the purchase price. You could expand your list to Oldsmobile and Buick too. My mom had an Olds Intrigue with a 3.8 that she easily put 300k on it with normal maintenance only and at the end of it's life for her, sold it for $800. You could also get by with cheaper insurance with no collision, just liability coverage.
