0780 Replace fuel filter
Can anyone give me some information about fuel filter replacement? I'm at 75k and i didn't realize that this had to be done at 60k or 5 years. I've searched and couldn't find anything

Yea...but how should i approach this?? Go to an independent shop and tell them?? Or do i just order the fuel filter and have someone install it? if so is that all i need to order is the fuel filter?

Hate to be the one to break it to you but prepare for rape on a scale that will leave you speechless.
When you say filter, the image of the those little filters on the old cars come to mind for many. Nope, not for the ole Benz-o-matic.
You will need the ENTIRE fuel sending unit to do filters.
Believe the part runs either 600$ or it's 600$ PER as there are 2 units. Gas tank is a saddle tank right under your rear seat with tanks on each side of the hump.
Install should be a couple hours labor and there is a chance car will smell like gas for a week or more.
For something like this, you just gotta go to the stealer IMO.
KEEP IN MIND. There has been a long standing service notice on the fuel filters and with the repair, many times they just throw in new filters/sending units with the fix. Check with stealer to see if yours qualifies and keep your fingers crossed.....and maybe keep a hundy on hand for palm greasing.

Last time I heard for my E500 was even worse...... Got to change the Fuel tank in order to change the filter. Cost = un-known
So I just put Techron fuel cleaning every oil change (approx $7)
Or you can just use it once every 1k miles to keep it clean.

E500 Fuel Filter
I know this is an older post, but it applied to my so I thought I would add some info.
1. I checked on the service bulletin for my VIN and the deal said it didn't apply. Mine is a 2004, so maybe it was earlier mfg dates? Not sure?
2. I found out there's a fuel sending unit that has the filter and another fuel pump on the other side. The dealer said the earlier is what's replaced for the filter. Gave me a price for parts of $269, plus a $16 wire harness (not sure what this is for, but it's only $16) and a $20 bracket. The other fuel pump without the filter is $315. Wondering if they changed the version/design, which is why it calls for a bracket? Maybe someone can clarify?
3. My local shop that only does Mercedes quoted me $460, so I'm assuming they don't replace the second pump without the filter. Can anyone confirm if this should be replaced? I know on a lot of cars, the fuel pumps last well over 100k.
Hope this helps someone else. I plan to do it myselft when I confirm the pumps and what needs to be replaced. I'm pretty new to the site, so I will try to add some how to pics to donate to the cause.

the "fuel filter" was what was cracked and causing gas to spill over and pool onthe top every time i filled up. The DS had cracks in the fuel sending unit/fuel fitler and cost $500 for the part and total was $900 at the dealer.
