E55 Fuel Filter and sending unit.

I just had service done at 55k. My mechanic told me I had to have the fuel filter changed at the next service at 60k miles. He said the problem with the 2003-2004 E55's is the filters are an older desing and the newer filter design (which the dealerships currently have in stock) usually do not work properly with the sending units and they usually cause the sending unit to malfunction. He recommended changing both filter and sending unit together at a cost of $600.
I know this mechanic well and he's been working on my cars for years so trust or his misleading me are not an issue. The reason I'm posting here is to find out if anyone knows anything about this and if there is a less expensive alternative than upgrading sending units which do not have to be changed?

+1 on the recall. If your car is still under warranty, see if he can cover the part under warranty with the recall. Some can still be covered out of warranty on safety issue recalls.

Let's just say ummmmmm, a good friend did that for me.

Cheaper alternative.....isn't any. Fuel such a huuuuuuge part to these motors, don't cut any corners. Just my humble.

Cool

I have an 04. There was a recall issue about the fuel filter. Like everyone else have said, if your car is under warranty it should be cover. In my case, i had a fuel smell/leak in my car. I ended up replacing the fuel sending unit and the filter. Luckily, my SA hooked me up so i only paid for the labor which was closed to $600. I hope this help.

If there is an outstanding recall on your car, it does not matter if it is still under warranty...it will be covered by Mercedes-Benz. Recalls do not expire.

I just had a recall done on my 99 E320 last week...something to do with headlights.

The fuel sending unit was an outstanding recall on my 04 E55 before i bought it. When i purchased it, the car was past the 4 year warranty date.

I had the fuel filler recall done, I recall because the dealership screwed up and my fuel gauge wasn't reading properly. I'll check with my guy to see if that has anything to do with the old vs new sending units.
