I am running 285/30-19s in the rear, and could definitely go bigger. If you are talking about stock rims, I don't have any first hand experience, so can't tell you for sure.

How certain are you that you could go bigger? The reason I ask is because I was thinking of doing 295/30/19 with 19x10 in rear. You think there will be any rubbing issues?

If a 285mm tire will fit on a 19" or 20" rim then it would fit on a 18" rim. The rim would need to be at least 9.5" wide and preferably 10" to 10.5" wide.
I am looking to get a 18x10" rim for my C43/55 and then run a 285/30/18 tire.

Jeff - speedy. You jumped the gun. Its an E with stockers. They are 9" wide in the rear. Plus there is more to it than width. Reread post #8

Emoving,
It seems you never purchased any tires and wheels before.
So, yes a 285mm wide tire will fit on a 15" rim, a 12" rim or a 16"-17" rim as long as the rim width is correct for the width of the tire. The diameter of the rim has nothing to due with regard to fitting a 285mm wide tire. The only thing that matters is the rim width and if there is enough room under the fender to fit the tire and wheel combination.
Normally you are going to need a 9.5" to 11.0" wide rim to fit a 285mm wide tire correctly.
Do you understand now.![crazy](https://mbworld.org/forums/images/smilies/crazy.gif)

I'm looking at tires now for my stock 18"s and am only considering +1 as that's the safe bet. So 265 to 275 and 245 to 255. Those will almost always fit and you'll get most of the benefit of the 285 with no worries.
My $.02.

Here it goes some numbers:
Stock
265/35-18 = 642.7mm diameter
Plus 1
275/35-18 = 649.7mm diameter
Plus 2
285/35-18 = 656.7mm diameter
Thats a difference of 14mm, divide it 2, thats a 7mm higher tire. The rear of your car would be 7mm higher. Maybe it would rubb a little.
285/30 would be too short.
And if the wheel is at least 9" wide, it would be enough for the 285s. And it doesnt look bad either.
